I’m in the market for a new ice house and I’m looking at a couple clams just can’t decide on the one I want. It’s between the nanook thermal and the yukon. I know the yukon sled is deeper and I like that better. The only reason I’m still considering the nanook is its fully insulated and the yukon has only a thermal cap. I want to hear what you guys think about the shallower sled in the nanook and how warm is the full thermal houses vs the thermal cap houses. Sell me on one!!!!

I can only speak to the Nanook. My wife purchased this for me as a Christmas present in 2013. It was a very thoughtful gesture! But, I returned it before putting it together. I had sat in them before and I really found the sitting position too low and uncomfortable. And I am not 6’6″ and 225#’s.

I vote Yukon due to the 9″ center height advantage over the Nanook.

I was worried about the loss of space going from a uninsulated Yukon to an insulated Nanook with the smaller and low sided sled. It hasn’t been a problem at all. The floor space is close to the same. I fish by myself so left one seat out. Its not as tall but with the thicker thermal fabric that allow its to sit better in the wind. It is way warmer. Saves on propane. The seat folds flat which allows another to be stacked on top. I use a foam deer hunting stand cushion for a little higher and softer seat. I’m happy with mine.

I ended up buying the yukon. Put it together last night and put it to the test this morning in -40 windchill with 25 mph winds here in northern minnesota. Worked great. Blocks the wind and it kept me quite comfortable with a single buddy heater. Love it so far.

Have you looked at the Otter Cabin XT1200 fully insulated house?

Yes I did and trust me I would have got that one if I had that kind of cash to spend on it right now. They look awesome!

I would check out the Otter XT650 Cabin. It’s a 2-layer canvas that does a heck of a job holding in heat. I’d venture to say its heat holding ability has to be pretty close to the Nanook’s thermal canvas.

From what I’m seeing for pricing, is a $100-$200 difference in price. If you were to compare the two side-by-side in person, you’d quickly realize that the price difference is well worth it. The sled quality difference alone is a huge deal. If you pull your shelter behind a sled or wheeler, the proven Otter (rotomolded) Sled is invaluable.

I personally love the difference in the sled durability. The sleds alone helped pull me to an otter and they are just a better quality.

I was looking at the Otter 650 and the sleds quality between that and the yukon seemed almost identical except the yukon sled has a grey inside. I have runners for it too which should make it last way longer. I have a regular otter sled and the bottom wore through in one season just from the ice, no asphalt or gravel, so I wasn’t too impressed. Plus the rear access door in the yukon is awesome for throwing fish out of the house )

The only problem I have with my full thermal nanook is the depth of the sled. It’s a lot of fabric to fold up and a deeper sled would be easier when packing. I would also like to see them add a skirt on the front of the sled like the Otters.

Looks can be deceiving. While the Clam sled may “look” identical, the history of the Otter Sled is proven. There is a reason they ship a ton up to the Alaska Back country. Failure is not an option out there.

Here’s an interesting tidbit. At a recent show I worked, 18 Otter shelters were sold the first day. The others sold 3, combined. Those are real and telling numbers.
