Is there an adapter that is needed for a clam drill plate to fit K drill? My dad bought a k drill earlier and recently bought a clam drill plate and found out two will not fit together.

I got mine right from Vexilar in Bloomington, I bet if you give them a call they’ll ship one out to you…

Why use the drill plate? It adds weight, cost, and is something else to break. I’ve only used my K drill bit and my cordless (with a handle) for two years with zero issues.

X2 on just using powehead with handle. K-Drill produces minimal torque and mine is an 8″, a 6″ would be even less. But either way, the power drill to auger shaft adapter is needed, my 8″ came with the adapter attached to the K-Drill right out of the box with foam float in place just in case drill chuck loosens.

Why not use the Clam Plate? It give you more control, weighs very little and keeps your drill out of the water and snow. I have a bad shoulder and might not be drilling without the Clam Plate.

Thanks Monti, I needed this info as well and will stop in to the Vex office to pickup an adapter.

I know I’m bumping a very old thread, but thought it was better than starting a new thread.

    I have the k-drill and a Milwaukee M18 drill with a handle.
Overall I have no issues just using the drill and handle. Personally think it takes a little too long to drill holes with the k-drill but I’m on season two with the k-drill and perhaps my blades are dull. Have also read it’s not made to be the fastest, just durable/tough.

I’m seeing that you can get an adapter for the k-drill to use with the clam plate.

My question to those with experience- is the clam plate worth it, or a significant upgrade to just going direct to the drill? I’d imagine the ergonomics of holding the plate vs the drill/handle is an upgrade.

Any thoughts or feedback? For more info – I ice fish maybe 5-10 times a year if I’m lucky, so I’m not out there constantly drilling holes.

I always enjoy the clam plate over just the drill. I have 2 clam plates for that very reason.

I purchased the Clam Plate (with gear box), the K-drill and the adaptor from Scheels all at the same time.

I use a Milwaukee M18 drill and this unit will lay down in the back seat of a Tundra. I would not place my old Jiffy Model 30 gas auger inside the cab of the vehcle, for obvious reasons.

I used a k-drill direct to Milwaukee last week and I have a Milwaukee on a clam plate. I don’t have one with a gear box. I much prefer the Clam Plate. I like the handles better. When drilling in deeper ice I feel like I have superior control vs just the drill, even if the drill has the stabilizer on it. With my setup (with a SM Laser auger) I don’t ever feel the need to clean a hole out halfways through. So I really bogged the k-drill in the thick ice and it wasn’t the easiest pulling it back out with just a drill until I put it in reverse.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like it’s definitely an upgrade. Hopefully I can pick up an end of season deal on one.

I bought a Clam plate for my KDrill/Milwaukee last week. The reason I did is because the handle attachment to my drill is stripped and would fall off when I was half way through drilling a hole. It was a solution to buying a new drill. Now that I’ve used it a dozen times, I like the plate a lot more than a drill with handle.

Settings? As in low or high? I use my drill on low.
Good luck with the Makita. Have you used it already? I use Makita for work. Got a pile of drill, saws, nibblers….. And a hundred batteries. Anyhow, the drills and batteries did not perform well with an auger. I was getting 5 to maybe 10 holes tops with a 5.0 battery. I talked to a couple Makita reps about this and they explained that they have experienced the same issues. It’s the star technology and the chips in the tool and battery that didn’t work well with drilling ice. They gave way more details, but after that, all 3 guys told me to buy a Milwaukee.

I have two clam plate setups. One with a 6″ mora nova, m18 drill and one with an 8″ razor synthetic, m18 drill. Friends that have fished with me always prefer to use my setup even though they bring their own drill/auger setup lol. Just over all more ergonomic for drilling ice imo.
