Ciscos on the surface?

Last weekend I was cruising to my night fishing spot at dusk and noticed ciscos jumping on the surface over 70fow. I figured what the heck and tried casting a swimbaits amongst the ciscos. In five minutes I caught nothing, but I did miss a substantial feeling fish. I’m assuming it was a walleye. My question is has anyone ever caught walleyes in a similar situation? Any lure preference?

Trolling big crankbaits before dark and after dark.

And well…depending on the water, muskies (big ones) would be out there chasing. The big muskies will vacate the weedbeds while the smaller ones stay in the weeds and follow those ciscos or tulibee out over the deep water. A muskie guide once described how he’d cast a surface bait out there over very deep water with great success, something most of us would not consider.
Anyway, guessing you weren’t on a muskie water. neutral
