“Ankeny schools biting down on Valentine’s treats
    KIM NORVELL
    [email protected]
Valentine’s Day parties will be a little less sweet for Ankeny students this year.
A new policy bans homemade and store-bought treats from classroom celebrations. School officials say it protects students with food allergies and those unable to afford store-bought snacks.
But the decision is not sitting well with some parents.
While Ankeny has nixed treats, a teacher in Des Moines planned to abandon the traditional student card exchange to spare potential hurt feelings. She later relented after parents objected.
Nationwide, schools are eliminating Valentine’s Day and Halloween parties and replacing them with generic celebrations. One school district in St. Paul, Minn., has banned traditional holidays altogether in the name of cultural sensitivity.
It’s part of a growing debate among educators and parents about how to protect children, physically and emotionally, without trampling on traditional childhood experiences”

Good Lord, I’ll be watching your responses to this as I know they will offend me! shock

St. Paul School Kisses Valentine’s Day, Other Holidays Goodbye

    Created: 02/03/2016 3:40 PM

Students at a Minnesota elementary school won’t be exchanging valentines, or celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas or Halloween.

Bruce Vento Elementary in St. Paul is joining other public schools opting out of holiday celebrations, striving to be more culturally sensitive and inclusive.

Principal Scott Masini drew criticism and support after sending a letter to parents last week saying he came to the difficult decision to stop the celebrations “until we can come to a better understanding of how the dominant view will suppress someone else’s view.”

The school’s student body is predominantly Asian and black. English is a second language for more than half of its students, who come from various faith backgrounds.

A district spokeswoman said Wednesday she wasn’t aware of new developments and that Masini wasn’t available for an interview.

It’s all about perspective… I imagine your perspective would drastically change if you had a 6 year old kid who was deathly allergic to f-ing peanuts.

Because same kid isn’t smart enough not to eat a peanut butter cookie? Controls can be put in place without eliminating age old traditions.

There really can’t be, and I don’t blame your ignorance.

Have a good buddy who’s child is one of those who’s unfortunately allergic to almost everything, pretty bad to. It has effected their life so dramatically its tough to see. No pets, no people who have pets, if you have pets change your clothes before you come. Food, even oils from foods, etc etc.

Now should we all be singled out for the few? IDK, but what I do know is with these societal precautions, and the medical advancements of this age we are going to see more and more of these kids, who turn into adults, who have their own kids who have the same needs. Back in the OLD OLD days, these kids would’ve simply died off prematurely, not allowing that gene to carry on. The laws of nature are getting twisted with humans, and the “weaker” genes do survive.

Unless someone is willing to let kids die in classrooms, where IMO they should be studying more and celebrating less anyways, no precautions are going to be good enough.

Back in the old days at school, we didn’t have cookies and such, we sucked on lead pipes and licked asbestos covered ones clean…. doah jeez. What’s the big deal ? Can’t even get a bag of peanuts on a plane in row 4 nowadays, because someone in row 24 might have an allergy to them, hey, I still choose to fly ! crazy

I think the point of the original posting was how ridiculous it is that we no longer have a national identity by giving into all the whiners. Without a national identity (language, traditions, holidays, celebrations, etc.) do we even have a country???

These old traditions were meant to keep people together and show how they felt about others, in other words how they cared about others. Now its time to set all of this aside because of some others beliefs, thats total crap. All those old traditions were to show young people how to respect and appreciate others. Now we have to cater to others feelings and watch what we say so we don’t offend? That’s also total crap. Back in the old days the young people who had allergies knew they had those allergies and also knew what they had to do to keep themselves safe and to not eat what everybody else could. They knew it was a bad draw of the cards but they settled for their misfortune and they also didn’t expect anyone else to change because for their misfortune. Some people are born unhealthier then others and others had different traditions and I can’t remember a time when anyone was offended, but now some supposed educated idiots are trying to change things, why not just settle for the way things were and are supposed to be. Cancel Christmas, valentines day, Easter? those people are insane when they try to change the older more healthy beliefs that kept people well based in traditions that meant something… In this one I’m going to say why don’t they just leave the country and go to a country where things don’t mean that much.

If true democracy and majority ruled, you wouldn’t likely be in the position of choosing a side.

Dave I can take your comment two different directions as well.
Either you would not be able to choose a side because of who you deem to be the majority.

    and/or

Because a true democracy and majority rules there would be no need to choose because, we would have never been put into this position.

    Which did you mean?
I have to believe that the majority of Americans are christian, no?

Winnebago I’m speaking in favor of what your saying. Here in my hometown of Cedar Rapids Iowa we have the oldest Muslim Mosque in America and that’s a fact. Around here no one looks down on this and has accepted it and its never been a question of should it be here or not, everyone knows its the Muslims place of worship. They have a fabulous bake sale every year and its packed because the food is so good. What I’m saying is that’s there, often enough, seems to be a few who instigate some type of bad feeling into a good situation where people of different beliefs have always gotten along. If school children want to exchange gift cards to show their spirit twards others and other children know they can’t eat things that others may be able to eat, but some idiot adult injects some kind of thought that its not Kosher to do that, they just plain and simple need to be sat down and have their as- chewed and be told to leave things alone, these people would more then likely be proud that they got this rule passed and be patting themselves on the back,,,at the expense of others comfort.

Denny, I’m saying that the rights of the many have been sacrificed for the feelings of the few. PC has gone too far in my opinion. So, your option #2. People have the right to not participate in anything they don’t feel comfortable with but society now asks us all not to exercise our right because it might offend somebody.

Now take into account the screenshot attached with the diversity of the school in question, also taking into account for over half English is their second language, and this “right” of not participating could possibly have 20 kids in a classroom blankly staring at 5 kids who might celebrate.

Does that make sense to you? We don’t want our lakes managed as a whole, why schools? Do all of you who are critizing these decisions actually walked the halls in these schools, spent time with the children, asked the teachers their own thoughts? Well I’m sure the principal has, and has found these ideas to be in the best interest of everyone.

Obviously a rhetorical ? bc we all know who pays for it. And actually ALL at the school now receive free lunches of last fall. If you want to look at a kid in the eye and tell him no free food for you go for it, as for me collectively if I have to pay $.05 extra in taxes I’m OK with it.

My cousin just moved to the ghettos of Alaska (doesn’t make sense to me either), but she says her students get sent home with free food bags as well as lunches.

We are all so concerned with silly holidays where kids are struggling to feed themselves.

Here’s a way it can be solved, we’re a democracy right? In the schools a teacher can take a few moments to talk to the children and explain that valentines day is coming up soon and give a little history about it, its school where young kids learn things right?, and that its a time when people who want to show good will of different kinds to others and simply say who wants to participate by buying a card or using school materials, they still have colored paper in art class don’t they??? and make a card in class as an art project or at home. They draw a persons name out of a bag and that’s the person they give the card too. A lot of other traditions come from others too so they can also be giving a choice to do it their way, to show other kids what theirs are.

During this time the child tells their mom and dad and they either give permission or not, seems to me that most parents would say yes. Even if its a long lived American tradition it doesn’t hurt a thing to show a gesture of good will twards others in schools, where caucasion children aren’t the majority, and simply ask if they would like to participate, hel- it might even catch on. Were supposed to be teaching communication and fellowship to our kids, not be taking it away without even asking them. Maybe that’s why so many people don’t get along today,,,they were never taught what Valentines day ever was and only were taught what politically correct was from their parents.

Ever notice that simple traditions catch on quicker and are more enjoyable then how to be politically correct. Using about 3 cents worth of paper and crayons to show someone how and to start goodwill?, it seems to be worth it to me and many many others.

Here’s a way it can be solved, we’re a democracy right?

First line in the Pledge of Allegiance would tell you no Sir.

who wants to participate by buying a card or using school materials, they still have colored paper in art class don’t they??? and make a card in class as an art project or at home.

These families can’t afford to buy their kids lunches, think they will give a hoot on some superficial holiday, which isn’t a public one, and buy some spongebob cards for the kiddo? Not. And yes there are school materials, but talk with some teachers and you will find that they are tight, and while many wonderful teachers out there will fork out their own money to do such things, in such schools as we are talking to celebrate a holiday meant for romance and lovers isn’t high on the list for 2nd graders. Would you like the little resources they have help them learn English better or receive a tootsie roll on a heart paper?

No matter anyone’s personal opinion on the matter, the First Amendment declares that this school, and/or districts have every right not to participate, being religious founded holidays it would be wrong to impose them on others. Perhaps it’s just bc I’m in agreement with the laws in this particular matter, but the incredible foresight by our forefathers just floors me to this day on such matters, kudos!
