Earlier this week the EPA issued a permit to allow the MnDNR & MCWD to use Liquid Potash (Potassium Chloride) to try an eradicate the Zebra Left in the Access area of Christmas Lake.

See story from Star Tribune: http://www.startribune.com/local/west/284547221.html

I sat in on the “Evening with the Watershed” put on by the Riley-Purgatory-Bluff Creek Watershed District” Tuesday evening. They had a speaker from MCWD update everyone on Christmas Lake. Pretty much what has been said here in the past and the news of the Potash Treatment Approval. A number of questions were asked and from my point of view, they are all still in Denial that there will be Zebra Mussels found through out the lake in 2-4 years, when this years Mussel Mature and Breed at maturity. Opinion from them still is that some boat had a mass of Milfoil with young Zebra Mussels attached and that the milfoil all fell off right at the access and then the Zebra Mussels jumped off the Milfoil and attached to the Rocks, etc. Personally my opinion, I think they’ve been smoking some of that yet to be sold Minnesota Medical Marijuana.

Only real good news was the answer to my question about opening the access for Ice Fishing. Yes, it will be opened once the whole lake is Iced over, then they will build a snow ramp of the floating boom for the Water Curtain frozen into the ice.

Sadly, however they are going to dump/pump the liquid Potash into the lake through hole cut into the Ice.
This is a Chemical, commonly used as a Fertilizer, but also used to Melt Ice.

One thing I see may happen is with Chemical aspect of the Liquid Potash, is potential killing many species of Fish, especially Trout and increasing the growth rates of the Milfoil & other Water Plants to completely clog the whole bay where the access is located.

No word on installation of the New Concrete Access Planks, likely sometime in the Spring after Ice-Out.

    W….. T…… F……..

    Triple facepalm

I got an email back from the DNR saying they would open the access for ice fishing, which made me happy. But now they are going to put icemelt into the water. This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Is the intent to get people’s trucks to fall through the ice so they can fine them to recoup the cost of the zebra mussel treatments?

I thought they killed all of the zebra mussels already. I am seriously considering just moving. Why pay higher taxes to live in an expensive area near a lake I can’t use?
