Hit the lower part of the river on Saturday and found the water probably the lowest I’ve ever seen it. After pushing the boat off the trailer and 100 yards over a sandbar I was finally able to fish. The smallies were very cooperative with the low water but the average size was a little smaller than normal. Finding fish was suprizingly easy, just find the hardest current and look for fish busting minnows . The best banks were chunk clay or undercut with overhanging grass. Spinnerbaits and poppers cast tight to the bank were our best producers. The key as always on the lower river was getting your bait as tight to the bank as possible. If it landed 2 feet away it was time to recast. At the end of the day I ended up with 30 smallies with a handful between 16-18.5″. If your thinking of heading out the bite is great but be careful in the skinny water.
