Funny, I made a post a few weeks ago in the Catfish forum asking the same thing, and not one reply. I have found beef liver at most grocery stores, but for some reason, it is not nearly as effective as chicken liver for cats.
I believe I only have like 7 lbs left from the cases I purchased last year. I have asked a few meat managers and my meat cutter cousin, and apparently they are being discarded by processors because other items with more demand bring higher profits.
The people I spoke with said this may not change for a while, at least in the Midwest area.
I wish you luck in your search, and if you locate a source, please send me a PM prior to posting here – just kidding.

Try the butcher shop rather than a grocery store or walmart etc. I was able to find some a couple weeks ago and I bought 2 of the 6 1lb packages they happened to have out on the shelf. However I have been catching channels on cut bait at about 2 to 1 over livers this year. I have been using creek chubs but suckers should work too. Can’t seem to catch anything on stink bait. go figure.

    Mojo,

I think the lack of response is because few on this site use or have talked about livers. Most are cut bait channel fishermen (going by the poll in my head).

I’m not making a stink about livers (see what I did there?), but personally I would rather use cutbait (suckers) or stink bait over livers. Less hassle finding it and keeping it on the hook. I know the nylon trick but that gets to be more of a hassle explaining to the officer why I stole the nylons off someones clothes line.

As for not catching anything on stink, I’ve found that cats like a variety. I seldom go out with one flavor. With the four rods I can use, I have one with Sonny’s, one with Secret Seven, one with Sudden Impact, and the last with cut sucker.

There are times when they all work but there’s more time when cats will chew on one and leave the other alone. I’ve even switch rods/bait when one rod keeps getting thumped and the others acted like there wasn’t any bait on the hook. Those days a person might as well fish all four rods with the bait that’s getting hit.

I feel confident in the above because its been reproduce many times in my boat.

The butcher shop for livers is a great idea!

After watching the IDO TV episode this morning channel catfishing in Madison, it looked like all their success was on cut bluegill.

But only in Wisconsin I reckon?

Thanks for the tips BK. I have been fishing a few places where I can only use 1 line and that definitely makes it tougher. I usually have a friend or two join and then we can do Cut/Liver/Stink but I haven’t had a hit on the stink bait yet. I have only tried the Triple S Blood bait (which I think is the same as Sonny’s?). At this point I just don’t have the confidence to buy a bunch of different kinds because I have been skunked on it so far lol. I would experiment more but I just don’t get out as often as I would like!!

Same stuff, just made by his son. I hear you… and like I always say “fish they way (or with) what your most comfortable with!”

Gill or any game fish used as bait is not allowed in MN. coffee

You could try Hansen’s IGA,a friend I fish with got some not long ago.Told him gonna feed the turtles again?

On the subject with stink bait,do they still make Bowker’s?That was some of the best(and rankest)I ever used.

Years ago,I fished with a friend on the Fox River in SE WI(Waterford).Used 5 rods with a different bait each.
1 with Mr Catfish dip bait-0.
1 with chicken liver, the crayfish would destroy it first.
1 with nightcrawler, got fiddlers on that.
1 with Bowker’s,and that had plenty of cat action.
Last rod had day-old dead crayfish and that one got the biggest cats. That was before the laws with using them inland, dead or alive. Was going to use them live, but I think the ranker, the better.

Nice thing with stink bait, only channels will eat it.Never got anything else with it.

And BK does put his mouth where his money is, lo and behold.

BK also adds that the channel’s make for great table fare.

So while you all enjoy this little video, I’m off to the grocery store.

Not for chicken livers, I’ll skip a few steps and just buy the catfish fillets… grin
