Chevy diesel exhaust and Rock Tamers

I installed Rock Tamers on my truck. I heard from a couple people that the straight back exhaust on the newer diesels melt holes or warp them. So I bought the longest receiver hitch I could find to put the tamers on. I am a good 12” away from the exhaust. Anybody know if that will be far enough away? I know I can tilt the rods 1/4 turn so they kinda hoop out first before down, but I don’t like the look. Also I seen the heat plate, and the cut out with screen modification kits. But I don’t know if those are necessary? 🤷‍♂️

I added Rock Tamers to my truck this year and after running it for a couple days I opted to add the heat shield. I could start to see slight wrinkling in the flap material. Since I added the heat shield there’s been no issues.

How many inches is the flap from the tip of the exhaust? I’d have to measure it but my guess is it is very similar to your setup.

Or have a muffler shop add a chrome downturn or side turn tip. I prefer the downturn tip for soot.

Almost all truck exhaust is straight out the back. Makes it impossible to use a towtector also.
Half tons are worse. Most have duals straight out under the bumper.

Towtectors have exhaust cut out kits and they work great.

Rocktammers also have exhaust cut outs. On my ram I have duals coming straight back. I just added the exhaust cut outs and now run them as close to my bumper as possible.
Otherwise the heat shield is pretty inexpensive and a solid option.

Thanks. Guess I will just go ahead get a heat shield. It surprises me that a foot is still too close!

I had some cheaper “Rockster” brand flaps that melted with my old dual exhaust setup (gasoline) in short order. I found an old horse mat up north and cut it using an oscillating multi-tool. Drilled holes and mounted that instead of the flimsy rubber flaps they came with. No more melting when the rubber is 1/2″ thick!
