Is this engine good? I’m looking for a work car, 120k, with this engine, with active fuel management. I’ve heard they’re oil burners, anyone have one? It’s a 2008 impala ltz.

to try and help you out,I googled the vehicle you have mentioned, yes, they have a lot of trouble with heavy oil consumption as well as oil leaks at the oil filter adapter gasket and the oil pressure sensor.
seeing as how this one is not leaking on the ground,I would suspect an internal engine issue.
another thing the impala’s and its sister models share is the ridiculous amount of time it takes to change a headlight bulb, 2.8 hours as you have to remove the front clip.
I would avoid the 3.9 engine

No experience with the 3.9 but I have a truck with AFM. I spent a lot of time reading up on this as I heard the same things in the 2008 Silverados. If you can step up a few years to 2010 or newer, most issues with oil consumption were fixed starting then. Otherwise jump back a few years and pick up a Monte Carlo or something with the 3800 series motor. Bullet proof motor in my eyes.

I have 2 Impalas LTZ’s with the 3.9. 2007 with 115000 not one problem with this car 29 to 32 mpgs. (hiway)2008 I have had to get the engine rebuilt(under warranty) because of the oil issue since then it still consumes oil but not enough to add between oil changes 3500-4000 miles. I get about 28 mpgs (hiway)with this car.
