What’s Biting

Was on the chain this weekend purely pleasure boating with the family. Got out about 11:00 am on Saturday and drove up to Sister Island on Prairie, man were there boats out there fishing. Both sides of the lake, all types of areas, must have seen 100 – 150 or more. Many more on Chetek and a ton on Pokegama.

This is a tight lipped crew! What’s biting? Those tagged fish aren’t worth THAT much money. Talked to one guy, sounded like a panfish bite. Most boats but not all were watching bobbers. Many boats with 5+ people fishing from the same craft. Any walleyes? Read in one of the brochures on the area that there’s been some stocking in the last several years.

Great weekend to be out! We always tried to slow down and cast a small wake near a pod of fishing boats.

Spent last week on the lakes and what a great week to be there. The fishing was great and the weather couldn’t have been better.

Did some bass fishing and did catch one very nice bass that went 3.5. Most of the bass have that fungus that they talked about last year.

We got our limit of pan fish with no problem. The crappies are nice size this year at about 10-11 inches. Some times you have to catch some small ones before being able to keep one but I did get into several schools where they were all very nice. I fished Prairie most of the time but it is the time of the year when they should start biting on the flats on the south end of Pokegama.

I did catch one small walleye while jigging for crappies. Some friends who fish for sunnys using bobbers, said they would catch several walleye each day but all were the same size, about 10-11 inches.

Heading back the week of July 4th so will have to see if the fish are still where I last saw them.

I fished a small team format bass tournament on the chain
last weekend, and we caught walleyes on crankbaits, in the
middle of the day, and northerns in a number of places one
would expect northerns to be. The walleyes on the other
hand were acting like bass. They weren’t far from the slop!
For the day we caught about 50 bass, and at least 15 were
over 14″. Our best fish was 3.9 lbs. We talked to a couple
of pontoons throwing bobbers in all directions, and the word
was the panfish were biting, but were running small, in most
    places.

So I would have to say, yup just about everything is biting,
on Chetek…Finding them is the trick
