Chequamegon Bay Fishing Question

I know that James did a show last week in Michigan on lake superior chasing coho which got me excited…I’m thinking about heading up to my wife’s family cabin in Washburn (Chequamegon Bay) this weekend and I wanted to bring my boat up and target coho and browns. This will be my first time trying this type of fishing. I have walleye gear and tackle to target trout but I would really appreciate any tips on where to target these fish this time of year. The apostle islands can be very overwhelming, my question is do I have to leave the bay portion to get on a good bite or do i have to travel north and fish around the cluster of islands. Basically I have no idea what area to target. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

    bradl110:

Its easy peasy… provided you have boards, get on the 10′ contour and start in Washburn and troll north, hopefully with the wind with stick baits (Orange, firetiger, natural colors, purples). Put all three lines toward the inside if you’re all ya got… You could make it more complicated, but try not to run most anything deeper that 30′ right now. If the water is cloudy, stay shallow, if its clear, you might want to be a bit deeper…

Questions, ask… lots of peeps on here will help ya.

Thanks for the response. Will a 10-15 mph NE wind be bad out there? I don’t really know how to judge great lakes since I never have fished them before.

Call ahead and find out what the conditions will be, heard there were 20′ rolling into Duluth / Superior this last week.

Provided you have a decent sized boat, 18′ minimum, you can get by… a 10-15 NE is not a particularly good wind to be in out there, unless you can get behind the islands or stay along the Ashland shore… the Ashland side is not really the side you want to be on for trout though.

Keep talking, we’ll get ya out there or take your boat and fish inland… plenty of good fishing west of Ashland too.

as for the great lakes look for the Marine Weather for the location your heading. not only will it have wind speed, it will also give approximate wave heights.

I started fishing Lake Superior in my 16.5′ lund angler and a 2 hour drive there. canceled a lot of trips before leaving, but never had to cancel once there!
