Have been absolutely SMASHING the last couple weeks. I picked up a few tips listening to Kevin Van Dam speak at a show and started using them and surprise, starting catching more fish on the jerkbait. Those tips, underwater footage, and fish catches below. Trying to bolster up the bass section on this walleye lovers site! mrgreen

Good insight. Although I generally use jerk baits more for smallmouth, they are obviously effective for largies too. My favorite color is perch. The mega bass series are super nice but the cost is steep, especially when you get bit off by a pike!

    Oh, they catch walleyes too.

Nice vid. Monday when I go out I will bring some, I’ll lead off with a spinner though simply because I don’t like to unhook all those trebles. I’ll wave if I see you, I’ll be pretty close to WBL.

    Yes, yes they do.

Frydog or anyone, have you used the Vision 110s? I’d love to know if they really are that much better (other than the paint jobs) than other versions on the market. I haven’t been able to make myself spend the ridiculous money on one or two to try.

I’ll admit I’ve bought a couple… although admittedly not at full price but close enough…

They do have great action, and I think excel on straight fluorocarbon or any non-braid that can be stiffer than braid and inhibits action. Their glide after jerk is very good. But honestly, not a big difference to the Rapala lures I use… not enough to justify the cost. One pike bite-off and you start doing the math in your head…

I saved my 2 Visions (110 and 110+1) for tournaments only. Lost the 110+1 to a toothy scud missile in the MN Fishing Challenge tournament last year and haven’t replaced it.

Good to know my thoughts were accurate. I have no doubt they are great lures, but I would hate to lose one to a pike. I haven’t lost a Thundercricket to a pike yet but I imagine it’ll be a similar feeling.

I’ve got 2 mega bass visions and in my opinion they are a superior jerk bait but if I’m fishing waters with toothy predators I refuse to use them. Ain’t worth $25 to have it snipped off by ol’ esox.

Love the Rapala Ripstop. Started using them last year for bass and they have really produced. It has extreme action, if you twitch it right you can get it to do a 180 and face backwards. The action is reminiscent of a weightless soft plastic jerk minnow. Opening weekend this year on Sand Point Lake I caught a 41″ pike, 25″ walleye and 19″ smallie (and tons of smaller miscellaneous fish) all in the same afternoon casting shoreline rocks with a #12 Ripstop in yellow perch.

Nice! That’s the type of action the Strike King KVD has also. If you twitch it on slack line it does 180s and shoots in pretty much every direction.

I am going to have to try this on the flats. I have been reluctant to use chatterbaits in the salt because the water is generally clearer so I don’t want a big blade being really agressive with the fish, but this looks perfect to imitate pinfish and white bait.

Were you fishing Braid during this video? Do you normally fish braid while fishing Jerkbaits?

Yes I do. With the KVD Jerkbaits I use I find that they suspend perfectly with braid and with fluoro it slowly sinks.

That is interesting. I don’t know of many who Jerkbait fish with Braid. Most I know still prefer good old Mono. I can see how Fluro sinking would effect the action of jerkbaits though.

I use Sufix Advance. Its more of an altered mono with more abrasive resistance and less stretch than standard mono. Still has some stretch though which I want, instead of braid.

I like to use Fireline with jerkbaits, on a fast action rod. I’ve tried with mono but I feel like the lure loses some action because of the stretch, specifically when you give it a jerk. I feel that the fast action of the rod helps provide the right level of give that helps action of the bait, instead of the line.

How do you like the Sufix Advance overall? I’ve got it spooled up on a rod and I have some mixed feelings about it. It seems a little stiff to me.

I like it for this application. I used mono before it and had a little too much stretch for me.

That makes sense. I’ll have to try a jerkbait with the reel I have it spooled on.

In cold water I like mono. When the fish are lethargic when long pauses with gentle jerks are key mono is the deal. For me, its harder to do subtle with braid.
If you want a real erratic action when things warm up and fish become more aggressive, I think braid does a better job.

This is why I use braid. You can really get crazy action with tiny little twitches because there is NO stretch. You just have to make sure you have slack line.

But I really believe there is no wrong way to catch fish. If it works for you use it! I’m not going to knock you and I like hearing from people that do it differently because maybe their way works better than mine.

I agree mahto. It’s interesting how people prefer different types of lines for the same lures/presentations. Like so much of fishing, it comes down to comfort and personal preference and confidence. I feel like I’m the only avid bass guy who doesn’t use fluoro at all. I had poor luck with knots and memory and that turned me off from it. I have way more confidence in mono.

I just started using it on a couple rods. My jigging rod I use for deep structure and my dock skipping/pitching rod. Everything else is full braid or braid to fluoro leader.

I think a lot depends on the rod you use. I went from using an extra fast rod where I used mono to a moderate-fast rod (DC 683c). Now in early spring I still use mono, but switch to braid probably low/mid 50’s water temp. The extra give on the rod seems to work well with the braid to get the right action, but it’s not too slow early on with mono when I’m trying to force myself to slow down anyway…
