Charging Marcum wrong?

Not that there is a wrong way, and the system is pretty idiot proof, but I have blown 4 of the 2 amp fuses on the charging “piggy back” so far.

Anyway to prevent that? Any others have that issue?

Do you have the charger unit already plugged into the wall outlet before hooking it to the Marcum? If so might help by hooking up the charger and Marcum together first, then plugging the charger into the wall outlet.

There may be less of a power surge doing it in that order. Don’t know for sure, just a guess.

Make sure the wires coming out of the base of the charger are not frayed. I won’t charge a battery in the unit any more. Check out link to bad charger?

    thanks

I’d check the charger output for sure with a DMM. Also, if you have a loose connection, you’ll have a greater tendency to blow a fuse, so check all the wiring and tighten your connections.

If everything seems OK, I personally wouldn’t hesitate to throw in a 3amp fuse.

I had same problem with mine last season. I took it to Marcum in person, they put a new pig tail on without the fuse. I now unhook the unit from battery and charge with alagator clip charger. It has been working fine since.

Yeah I’ve usually plugged in the wall first before the unit. Maybe need to do it the other way around.

It’s a brand new unit this year, so everything is fine as far as the piggy back.

    Thanks for the input guys

You should be able to try a 3 amp fuse as well. I’m not a electricity expert, but I’d think that could help. Otherwise give them a call. Maybe there is a problem in the wiring harness causing a short?

Disconnect the battery and hook it up to a Vexilar, problem solved. Seriously always hook up your charger before plugging it in just to be safe.

Make sure your charger plugs in the wall so the cord is vertically down. I blew a few fuses earlier this year because I had it plugged in upside down. I think the charger does not work if you plug it in both ways. Must have something to do with which plug is the hot and which is neutral. IF that is the case they should have different size plugs so its idiot proof.
