Changing prop pitch how much will affect hole shot

Have a Lund 202 GL, as we get more people, tackle, and a full live well the hole shot slows quite a bit. Already have trim tabs. How much will dropping 2” in pitch affect the hole shot? I realize it will affect the top end, but not running full open very often unless I want to have some fun. Will the difference be noticeable? The trim tabs 100% make a difference and would highly recommend them if anyone is wondering about them.

Definitely look to some form of 4 blade if you want a strong hole shot. I just went through the same thing on my 620fs. Went from a 3 blade 23p to a 4 blade 19p. Difference was remarkable.
Look at the rev4, q4 or bravo lt for starters. There are many other options as well.
I lost about 3 mph on top end and empty the boat is right at the rev limiter but it does not happen real often that I have an empty boat.

Good luck, may take a prop or two to tweak it to perfect.

Keep the prop you have if it is working well and have them put a couple of vent holes in it. I had them drill 3 3/8 inch vent holes amazing the difference, when I put the hammer down my RPM`s jump to about 3,600-4,000 rpm the power band of my motor and she jumps out of the water, the bow barely comes up.

Some 4 stroke engines don’t work as well with the vented props like the 2 strokes do. As an example my 350 verado with a tempest+ prop doesn’t change anything if I remove all three vent plugs other than I can hear more exhaust noise. When I had the same prop on an E-tec it was night and day, but I had to change the hole plug sizes to much smaller holes due to too much slipping at slow speeds. If I were in big waves and I was just trying to keep the nose high and go about 18-20MPH the prop would start to slip it was beyond frustrating that trip. I did get it figured out after much trial and error. With that being said I don’t think I would drill and vent a prop that wasn’t designed for being vented.

Need to know current prop size and pitch, WOT RPM’s when trimmed out.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I have a 3 blade Mercury Enertia 14 x 19P. Running at WOT the motor sits around 6100 – 6300 which is what the book for the motor says it should be at WOT for the verado.

As long as it doesn’t have a Yamaha on the back you should be able to play around with prop pitch and find a happy medium. As said above vent holes do nothing for a 4 stroke motor. If it does for some reason have a Yamaha on the back your just out of luck. Just accept you have an anchor bolted to the back of the boat.

You want a 14x17p 4 blade SS Spitfire Mercury prop

If he’s running a Enertia now, no, he does not want a Spitfire. It would be too small. Enertias fit the larger gearcase, and Spitfires fit the 75-115 gearcase.

6100-6300 RPM range is likely a L6 Verado, max on a V8 merc is either 6000 or 6200RPM’s depending on model. I know some people have luck with Rev4’s and Bravo’s if you want to run a 4 blade.

To everyone saying don’t play with the vents on a 4-stroke, don’t write it off. The L6’s liked them closed, but some specific boats with the new V8 mercs will benefit from some venting. This can apply to some of the smaller 4 strokes as well, but it’s not as much of a sure thing like it was with 2strokes. The V10’s also like venting in some applications.

Did not think about the motor size LOL, I went through this with my 115hp merc when switching to a 4 blade.

Yeah, have the L6 Verado. That motor is so quiet! Thanks for the thoughts everyone.

Mojo, great offer, appreciated. I am the Des Moines area so wouldn’t be unlikely to the make that work. But thanks again!

If you’re already in Iowa I wouldn’t hesitate to reach out to Iowaboy1. He is something of a genius with outboards.
