Hi guys im using a stihl ms 381,recently a heavy 2 cycle oil mix was used by another guy . i am experiencing an issue where the engine shuts off whenever i lock the chain! chainsaw works fine whenever the guard is disengaged and once the chain keeps spinning a bit , will idle normally! but once chain guard is engaged , saw wont start or idle!

    any ideas on this issue!

Pretty sure the saw is designed to NOT start or run if the kickback or chain brake is engaged.

A chainsaw remains at idle even if the chain brake is engaged. The issue i have is it cuts off which it shouldn’t do.

Doesn’t that kinda defeat the purpose of having it?
Mine runs and starts with it engaged.

Well then what you are saying is the saw is NOT working “fine”. The clutch is not fully disengaging, the chain should NOT be spinning at all when the saw engine is at idle speed.
Is the idle speed adjusted to high?

Plug could be gummed up from too rich of mix.

Take the bar and clutch apart and clean the junk out. Then dump the wrong mixture gas out and put fresh stuff in. Also check your bar oil. Should fix your problem.

    Do this first. ^^^

If you’re still having problems with it killing, adjust your idle speed.

Engaging the chain brake should NOT kill the saw when at idle. This is for safety, under certain conditions the saw should be started with the brake engaged for safety.

Make sure you know which is the idle speed adjustment screw before turning anything, do NOT adjust the High and Low carb adjustments accidentally.

The idle adjustment should be made with the saw at operating temperature, so start and warm up the saw before making any adjustments. With the saw idling, the chain should stop fully. If it does not…

With the saw OFF for safety, turn the idle screw outward 1/4 of a turn. Start saw and observe idle. Repeat procedure if chain is still turning at idle. If the engine will not idle you have slowed the idle speed too much, turn screw the opposite direction in 1/4 turn increments to increase idle speed.

Just a quick thought, could be you have a broken or weak clutch spring. It will cause the chain to want to continue even at correct idle and also cause to much drag when the brake is engaged.

Zed, I would make sure to check your air flow also.. Make sure it is clean. Look at your exhaust cover and screen in front of the exhaust. I only run 170’s and a 311 but when I remove the exhaust cover there is a metal screen on mine. These will become very tacky if you run a heavy oil mix.. Mine get tacky anyways because I beat the crap out of them..
If this screen is dirty hit it with a torch to burn excess oil off and then brush it clean.
I have ran into idling issues in the past where this fixed it.

New plug, fresh fuel at the right mixture, one cap of sea foam. clean air filter. may take a 1/2 tank to clean the heavy mix all out.

The MS 381 has a more complex clutch that most Stihl Saws, was able to open up, clean and lubricate the clutch, issue was resolved! thanx guys !
