Hi Guys, I just wanted to post a topic for this. This is not to pitch a sale to sell carvings but to share some information. I have been carving for about a year and half now. I have had a few inquire with people looking to buy something. I just wanted to attach my info here in case anyone is interested. I do not log on the site as often as I should so will attach my cell # for contact.

If anyone has questions about price I can try to help. I am still trying to get a good idea of this myself through other carvers. I am not a speed carver so if I price by the hour no one could afford my work. haha..

What I have learned is carvers will charge 100.00-150.00 per foot on general carves and they double their cost to carve on site. Detail, Hardwoods and specific extras can really jump that price as well. So for me I price by the specific carving. I try to keep in both worlds and make things affordable if possible. So if you were looking for a owl that is two ft tall on a 1 ft stump ( 3 ft total ) it would be 3-450.00. If you wanted it in oak with taxidermy style eyes and top end detail it could bring that up to 550-700.00. This is just general cost but give an idea of what some carvers are charging. Its a big gap from low to high that you see there. Carvings and carvers are some of the most inconsistent cost/contractors that I have ever seen. Just the way it goes so if you are looking for a carving it is worth the time to look around and find what it is you are looking for. Some people just look at cost and others just look at the carving and don’t care about cost. Its all in the eye of the buyer and I will always recommend doing your homework before buying anyways. If someone wants to call me or shoot me an email for advise I can try to help. Maintaining carvings, links or names of other carvers. I will try my best to help out anyways.

Very nice work. I have always wanted something carved but don’t want to be involved with the maintenance of keeping it looking good.

Very nice carving. My wife and I are looking for a carving for our cabin. We looked at a Baxter’s guys carving but his eagle was to rounded and not detailed. Your eagle/snake caught my wife’s eye.
I actually would prefer a yeti, she would like an eagle. I’m sure we will end up with an eagle.
Approx 6′ tall with a 6′ wing span.
Is this something you can do? I got a great spot for it.

Brian, I will be there and looking forward to it. Will be my first time showing the carvings.

Eelpoutguy, you already have a Squatch it looks like.. haha. Anything is possible with a carving. I could do an eagle but will pm you a link to look at also. This guy does amazing work and would be worth checking out. I would be a few months out before I could start a bird that size.

    Art in the Park

I thought about carving a bear that could hold my tools and a beer to keep at home while I carve but you guys have me thinking about doing a squatch with the same helpful hands.. Would be fun to try. Never carved one.

I must say this; The carving you already have in that spot looks very life like,,,,,,,,,, even for a Yeti.

Joe someone mentioned the up keep. What does that consist of?

It depends on what and where…. All my carvings have 3 coats of an oil on them. Pretty much deck oil and are made to be inside or outside. If inside there may never be any thing you ever have to do. If it is on a porch out of the rain and sun it may be good for quite a few years as well.

If it is outside in the sun, rain and snow it will need to be sealed at least once a year. I would say twice if you want it to look good. Spring and fall.

The carver will let you know what he uses for a finish. I use Cabbot Timber Oil and TWP for the most part. I have only use Spar Varnish on a couple carving. Spar is a whole different finish than a deck oil. Oil is a soft finish and can be applied at liberty as often as you want. The wood will only absorb what is needed.

Varnish and urethanes are a hard fishing. They will layer up on you. They give a nice gloss finish and look great for a while but will require a bit more work to prepare for re application. In my opinion a varnish or urethane is best if inside or on a porch so you can limit the need to re apply product. Like I wrote above a good carving with a varnish inside may not need to be maintained at all.

All carving are subject to cracks.. I should say it WILL crack. Every carving does. If you were to get a bad one it can be repaired. This will most likely have to be done by the carver. Because of cracks/checks I recommend starting with a soft finish/oil anyhow. You can always apply varnish a few years later after the carving has settled down on water loss and checking.
