If next summer is anything like the last two, they may be hard pressed to get boats in the water in August..
Just to clarify, the area that is open to fishing is Highway 25 in Belle Plaine south to Highway 14 in Mankato. YOU CAN LAUNCH ANYWHERE!The Captains meeting and weigh in is in Henderson. The river maybe low and it maybe high, nobody knows but should be fun…. Let’s try to be a little positive…
(EDIT: The boundaries of this event has changed. Update below.)

Sorry if I came off as negative. I am glad to see a tourney in the area, and that is some wicked catfish water from BP to Mankato.
Just saying that the past 2 years it seems like the drain plug has been pulled on the river after the 4th of July

Now there’s a twist in the rules. Nice Job King Kat Organizers!
Thought I read 6 rods per boat max, but it goes on about State laws apply.
With 2 lines in the water and a 50 foot distance from an anchored contestant, we’ll need to know the high percentage spots and get there first.
Looks like guiding on the weekends and fishing the MN during the week.
I gotta a 200hp motor if that Lund needs a boost. Sounds like this will be a fun tourney in a new area!

Let’s try to be a little positive… maybe
Hi Thos, are you involved in organizing this? If so, I think you’ll catch a little flack. Take it in stride.
Since catfishing here is a minority and just starting to slowly gain some notoriety, I think a lot of people get defensive and protective. Some may even claim to be promoters in Mn catfishing and the fishery. A lot of them think of themselves as renegades and even pioneers.
I know I have seen the comments already about props being destroyed, people disrupting the tourney and worried about mortality.
I think subconsciously a lot of them are scared that a bunch of “out of staters” are going to come here and show them up.
I predict success. I predict a local will win it and the local entry turnout will be high. I predict non-Minnesotans are not morons and will plan accordingly to river levels. I also predict it will be a great weekend too raise awareness of the great fishery we have.
When you think about how far the Minnesota has come in regards to cleaning it up, it’s going to show people a lot of progress can come from good stewardship.
If you aren’t involved, well I said my peace.
I’ll be honest. When CKK called last summer and talked about the areas and where to and how to, the very first thing that crossed my mind was “‘ell, I don’t want 100 boats fishing my areas”.
That lasted for about 10 seconds as I realized the recognition this would bring to cat fishing in MN. This will only help to change some of our backward laws in MN and WI.
To the folks that helped organize this so quickly…kudos!
If the tourney ever comes to Mendota, I feel sorry for the other guys. I am tempted to give this a shot anyway.

They aren’t hand fed and farm raised on the Minnesota.
Where’s Steve DeMars?
Aren’t we full of sunshine. Just for your information, I grew up on the Wisconsin River, and pool 9 of the Mississippi. Not only that but Mendota is part of the Yahara River. It has current and knowing how to use the current to your favor is the number one skill here that takes development. Were you referring to second place Steve?

Kevin – “Full of sunshine” – isn’t how I would characterize you at all. The “full of” part is right but it sure isn’t sunshine.
Hi Pug – I’ve just been watching this whole Cabela’s King Cat thing play out. I find the posts to be fairly interesting – I did do a Google Earth look at that stretch of the MN River. Some nice cat water in that stretch but it does pose some challenges for the fishermen. Could be an interesting tourny if they can pull it off.
I had some knee jerk reaction to some knee jerk reactions I was reading. In the end I just hope if they pull it off it has a positive affect on catfishing in Minnesota. I think we all do.

Heh heh.
I have a question for the guys that fish over that way.
Isn’t there a Belle Plain League or maybe it’s a tourney I’m thinking of that’s held over that way about the same time?
You might be able to tell I haven’t fish that far up river before.
Anyway, how to they “pull it off”.
Do they move the times of the year when they hold the contest? Or just cancel it when the water’s too low.
There’s a Franklin tourney too. I’m not sure when that one is going. I wouldn’t think there would be more water up there then down around Henderson.
We’ll have to get a live stream going for the weigh in or something.
Still a little giddy that there’s going to be a large cat tourney in Minnesota.
I grew up down there. YEs they have the BElle Plaine Catfish league. I don’t and haven’t fished it. I do know from growing up in Le Sueur (just south of Henderson) that the water can vary greatly. Could be high and could be low. I know for a fact when it’s low there are places you can walk across and not get wet. So yes this will be interesting to see how it plays out. I myself hope it works and like pug says. Hopefully helps MN catfishing. Kind of neat to see a big tourny like this in MN. I do beleave the Mississippi would be better suited for this though being its more stable. But the MN in that stretch has some very big fish!
Steve,
No disrespect intended. I have fished a cat tourny or two and never seem to place in the money.

there is the belle plain cat league, but im sure that will be planned around this event, but there is also the belle plain catfish contest which is going to be the weekend before, i have fished this part of the river in that time of the year, all i have to say is leave the prop boats at home, or bring a few spares cause it get pretty gnarly.
Did this ever happen? Anybody here fish it? results?
Inquiring minds want to know.
