I was just wondering when the cat board would get it’s first post of the day!
Seriously, I vowed to participate in this last year, printed out the control item for my tackle bag, and completely slacked on it. This year though, this year!
I started off last year strong, got a bruiser early on, then I got busier and fished less and less, but I did win a sweet landing net!
Darren has done a lot of work getting folks to donate prizes. Considering there’s no entry fee, it’s a no lose situation. Check out the page, submit a fish, and win something for nothing. But just remember, if you want to win the bragging rights, you better plan on putting in some SERIOUS hours! The number of hours the folks in the top 5 flathead spots fish in any given year probably outnumbers the number of hours I’ve catfished in the 4 years I’ve fished for em.
I’m going to try this out this year. Looking at the big fish from last year is pretty intimidating though. all in good fun I guess.
Bah! I should have the control item with me. I could be spending a little time in the top 10 before getting knocked out for the rest of the year.
I’m in this year. Laughable in the channel cat category, I’m sure, but I might pull in a few flatheads worthy of the contest. Have to remember to make the tape measure part of the arsenal now.
Steve better get fishing hard. Matt in the flathead category and myself in the channel is going to make for some stiff competition. I might just be starting my crusade this very weekend.
Whiskers…Jerry is already catching some niceones. I think he’s got a couple 20 pounders so far. He said he might try this tour too. I’ll be up there in a couple weeks myself. That’s a great Channel Cat fishery. I hope Babe didn’t wreck it with his show.
Maybe I’ll see you out there.
L8R…Ken
Kev, I might enter this year. I see that a guy needs one of those little signs that say king of cats with a picture of each fish, how do I get the sign, I can get the fish.

mossydan – Just go to the King of the Cat website and click on Control Item. Print out the control item and make sure it is clearly visible in each picture of the fish that you submit. I take my Control Item to Office Max and have them laminate it and then I put a small clip on it. Just clip it to the fish or clip it on your shirt when you take the picture. Pretty simple and easy to do.
Um yeah, and you not not catch me with my thumb in a 36″ channel cat’s mouth…
You guys are so cynical.
It was only a matter of time before it outgrew the honor system.
If you think someone is cheating. Don’t play along with the game. That is my theory. therefore I will not participate. Besides what is the point of cheating? getting bragging rights that you caught the biggest baddest fish? And if you lied about it how would it make you feel good???
in regards to the 36 inch fish. I agree it is NOT 36 inches.
there is a ruler behind the fish in the picture. I digitally measured it with photoshop. I come up with 24.5 inches. If you used the measuring stick on the boat lift as your tape measure, your math skills need work.
Just saying I don’t believe it either….
Not to beat the dead horse here, but if that stick is measured off in 1″ increments, I counted 22/23 tops.
Also, having caught a few 30+ channel cats, holding one like that is damn near impossible!
I agree! camera angles change things. If you catch a fish and you don’t want to be questioned, take a picture with it measured too.

The contest does a bunch of drawings and the only requirement is that you have entered fish. So there is more than just trying to win it.
I know what the contest does. but catching a few fish once a month will get you in these drawings. That is why I say, there is no benefit to lying about a length of a fish! The only benefit of lying about the size of your fish is to make the top three and brag about it?
get what I mean?

Right on homie.

you should have seen the 38 x 20 channel I caught yesterday. I was going to enter it but then I realized I measured in mm…
Per Facebook, Darren has changed the rules so that pictures with the fish on a ruler is required.
I’m glad this rule came about! I know it sucks for darren and the admin crew but it was something that needed to be done! Too many people out there can’t be honest and tell the truth! Its a fun free tourney and people still gotta cheat! Thanks darren and the crew for all ur hard work!
I was talking to Darren today via PM and we had a discussion about all the controversy concerning questionable KOTC submissions. He sent me a PM that I can share with you on IDO to bring you up to date on the King of the Cats Contest. I don’t know about the rest of you but I have a blast participating in the King of the Cats contest (this year I’m going to hammer Whiskerkev). It is one of the first sites I check most every morning to see who has moved up on the Leaderboard. Anyway, this is the latest info from Darren:
I apologize for not being able to respond directly so it will have to be by proxy. This contest inherently will always have a loophole or two to take advantage of. In the beginning as we started out it was mostly close friends and acquaintances. It was easy to take care of any objections or discrepancies. This is no longer the case as the popularity has grown. The popularity is not bad or good, just is what it is. My personal opinion is the more the merrier and I love to see new folks getting involved. It is all about having fun. Personally, I enjoy the competition with myself and my close friends. Trying to leap frog them and beating my previous bests is what I shoot for (kind of like SteveD and Whiskerkev going at it all year here last year).
We all know that competition can be good and it can be bad. In this case it wasn’t one bad apple, but a slow progression of questionable entries. This new rule only applies to channel cats over 30 inches and Flatheads over 45 inches in length only. There will still be opportunities to take advantage of the format and it could have been changed quite a while ago, but rash decisions sometimes can make for rash consequences. I have mulled this over a long time and felt it was in best interest for the contest at this time. Who knows, years down the road it might be required to purchase an official standard measuring device, or by then it could even be a short video clip of you measuring the fish or something off the wall like that. Never quite know where technology will take us, but I intend to embrace it however I can.
Thanks to those of you that are participating and helping make it a fun time and for those considering it, give it a try you might have some fun with it. I am currently in the process of adding some more nice prizes to great stuff already there and remember, best of all it’s free.
Also I wanted to mention that I plan on doing a invitational money contest on P2 this year in June. Invites have been sent out and the minimum available slots are filling up, but if anyone reading this is interested, shoot me an email via the KOTC site and I’ll see what I can do.
I must be a mind reader. I just installed a 52 inch tape on my live box. I always round my fish down to nearest half inch. I missed my first opportunity to set the gas pipe mark for Steve due to a battery issue last weekend.
