Well, I am alternately ambivalent and heartbroken over missing this year’s Sturgeon Excursion. Alas my loss… but I have something of a consolation prize. Something I’ve used the last couple days to great success.

Hopefully I’ll bring home a few shovelnose from the St. Croix this year…

The sausages in the picture are fresh polish sausage from Cub… and D*MN they were tasty!

Pretty sure you can only keep shovelnose on the Mississippi downstream of the Red Wing dam.

If he is like me, I always get pool 3+ mixed up with being the St. Croix. I never fished the pools as a kid and it is sort of engrained in my brain that the river with MN on one side and WI on the other is the St. Croix.

Pool 4 would be where the shovels start. Although I’m not sure why, seems to be quite a few caught up stream too.

Isn’t the confluence with the MN on P2? Plenty of shovels in there!

Yeah, but they are only legal on P4 and south.

    Thanks for the clarification Ralf.

From Lock and Dam #3 South the limit is 10 shovels.

I still want to smoke one of them. I just get too much satisfaction giving them a kiss and releasing them.

As much as it creeps me out to say this, I am, indeed, like Mike in this case. I meant the Miss south of the Red Wing dam. Ooops. I just want to try to some smoked sturgeon is all…

And Brian, when they say “smoking them” they don’t mean like a cigar… they mean cooking them slowly with indirect heat.
