That color looks nicer than my pink rod.

It would look better if a certain someone was in the picture holding it.

PS no…I’m not talking about you Jeff!

The only rod ever needed for channel cat fishing is an Ugly Stick medium or medium heavy. The cost a whopping 26-35 dollars each. That is a nice looking rod and I really like it is made here but I could probably have two indestrucable setups for the price of just that one. Let the arguements commence.

I think the blanks on Ugly Stiks are made in the USA!

I know what would happen if I tried to use that one here. It would be in two peices in short order. Graphite and Mendota cats don’t mix well.

Indestructible or not ….If you dont TAKE CARE of your rods then a custom made rod is NOT for you,If it was a dollar issue I would just use a broom handle and bells.

For me its about a hobby I learned a few years back and really enjoying building them for us and to have really nice rods that fits your needs/wants at a fraction of the cost, in all the years of my fishing I have only broke 2 rods and neither one broke while fishing. I have learned to take care of my equipment so it will last a lifetime.

Theres nothing better than catching fish on equipment that you built weather it be rods, lures or jigs. It gives you a sense of satisfaction.

Besides if the FW wants a fuchsia cat rod, who am I to say NO

Well this is going to be tricky as I can’t see all the posts that I want to reply to from here…

To BK: With all my winter apparel you are better off without me in the pics.

To Kev: I have been using Trumar made custom rods for about 8 years now and have NEVER seen one break. Store bought rods may be cheaper but what goes into a rod made just for you is priceless. And I have faith that after I am gone my kids will still use them with the same love that I have now.

To Pug: I could have told you that after he built me my Fuschia rod last year. This is number 2 in my Fuschia rod collection. I was semiafraid (new word) to use my Medium light fast one up at Evert’s for fear of snagging or catching that REALLY big one and having it not able to handle it. So I asked for this rod which is Medium Heavy Fast.

To BK: Thanks for the confidence that I could take him !!!

To Trumar: No store bought rod will ever mean as much to me as my JW Rods

I think that about covers it.

Are you saying you built that rod? I may have to have you commission one for my GF!

I’d still have to ask to borrow it. Actually fuchsia is my favorite color. It’s a manly pink. Well, as manly as pink can get. I’d use a fuchsia rod.

The first summer I fished here, I broke 5 or 6 rods all medium weight graphite rods from St Croix and Gander and one a custom rod on a St Croix blank, then I bought 6 ugly sticks and I abuse them and I haven’t broken one in 7 or 8 years. That rod would probably be fine for skinny river cats. You’d be welcome to come down and fish sometime and we’ll see how long it lasts.

I don’t know what you do with your rods, Kevin, but I find it more than a little hard to believe. I’m not calling you a liar, but you must be harder on equiment than I am! I’ve caught tarpon on medium action graphite St. Croix rods, and they pull a lot harder and faster than channel cats.

Mary caught these on the same blank, different color.

Although it was not the rod that caught the fish, bringing in these two on a rod that was made by your Favorite Significant Other (FSO) would have made it just a touch more special.

    Ralph,

I am not joking. The fish here break rods on hook set especially when fishing weeds. Come down and find out. I’d be willing to show you. Since I went Medium Heavy and Ugly Stick I haven’t had any breaks. I also bumped up to 20lb Power Pro and haven’t had as many line breaks. I do like the custom rod, I am sure it is well made and does the job fine. You don’t have to worry so much about a 30lb fish bulldogging you into the weeds there. I am not trying to hurt anyones feelings or suggest someone made a poor rod. I know it wouldn’t last long here is all. I can count 7 IDO folks who have a PB channel cat from my boat.
