Sturgeon outing ?

I have used many styles and have gone to 2 different ones and they hold my boat rock solid.

I have 1 Richtor anchor and the newest edition is the Digger anchor. The Digger is an awesone anchor and between the 2 of them, I can hold in about any current.

The Richtor I have 3′ of chain on and 150ft of rope. The digger has approx 125ft of rope also.

I do not typically use that much rope unless it is really bad. I do not like all of the rope out when a biggie is on as they can get into the rope.

I tried a mushroom the first year I went up there because it was what I had. I was not impressed and did not think it held at all. It had no dig, so any current and you would drag the anchor along the bottom.

While it may work for some, I went and got a different anchor. I would be willing to make you a great deal on (2) 15lbers though

Another good idea that I’ll be using on the Croix this fall is the idea of attaching a large floating ball to your anchor rope, maybe 3-4 feet from your attachment point to the boat.

Even with 80 lb braided line, most fish over the 50″ mark tell YOU where they want to go and you have little control. That typically involves wrapping around the anchor lines. And like Farmboy, I run two anchors so I don’t swing.

The smaller one I have in the back, isn’t too bad to pick up but the larger one is a pain, plus then you have to re-find your spot.

With the floating ball securely attached to your front anchor rope, just unhook the anchor rope and drift while landing the fish. Then drive back to the ball and re-hook!
Should save your back after 2-3 days of fishing!

Like Farmboy said. Mushrooms have very little ability to dig into the bottom. That slip ring fluke style you linked to should be a good one. 11#s should be a pretty decent size. That is similar to the water spike. With a chain and plenty of rope you should be able to get it set.

I have also used a water sock for keeping the back of the boat from swinging around. Keep in mind in the lower the flow the less effective a drift sock will be for this. Dont think we will need to worry about low flow this spring.

About 3 weeks and we will be making our 1st trip up.

Definitely the church. Every time I face it the skin on my face sizzles.

I use to use a mushroom also around home and don’t even use it there anywhere as it is good on calm days only.

Ok, ended up with a 25# Rictor for the rear anchor, if all this doesn’t hold us, we’ll tie off BK’s boat…I’m sure he won’t mind…:)

I’m told that it gets pretty crowded near where the lake hits the river, but opens up quite a bit further down/up/? stream???

I’d like to stay out of everybody’s way at least for a bit..:)

That’s what’s so great about the Sturgeon Excursion! It’s the complete opposite of walleye fishing.

If you want to anchor someplace and your close to another boat..just ask them. Many more times than not, they’ll encourage it. Of course we need to be mindful of their anchor rope and the fishing area behind their boat.

It’s social fishing at it’s best!

Now if you have a foul mouth and are planning on drinking 2 cases of beer on the water…I would suggest staying away from others.

Besides that, it’s just as much fun to watch others do the sturgeon dance as it is to catch them yourself!

PS Anytime we get a fish on in our boat the rear anchor gets pulled right away. That back anchor rope is the first place a sturgeon will head off to.

That anchor will work. Think thats the same one they use on some air craft carriers.

Some years the fish dont seem to care if there are a ton of boats or not. Other times I think its paid to get away from them. It can get pretty crowded right near the access and into 4 mile bay. The gap came get crowded to. If you head up river from Wheelers point even a mile or 2 there gets to be plenty of less crowded areas. Or going to one of the other landings up river can be less crowded to.

I seem to have a skill at finding anchor ropes, so a bit of space makes things easier..:)

Foul mouth and 2 cases of beer???…ok I’ll tell the wife she has to cool it then.

    Thanks guys.
