Sturgeon worm storage-What do you use?

I know some guys bring along worm bedding and a 5 gal bucket. They transfer the crawlers from the flat into the bedding and the bucket for ease of carry and the bedding is less dirty than the dirt they come in.

Others simply put the dirt and crawlers in the pail and call it a day. If you’re careful, very little dirt ends up on the carpet.

What’s your preferred method of crawler care?

I prefer to keep them warm by putting the first 2 dozen in my mouth and than pulling one or two out as needed. I can also tell if one has a less than desirable flavor

If you put a dozen in each cheek, you can tell when one cheek is getting light, and add a few more so you are always well stocked.

On a slightly more serious note:

I keep a large cooler with worms right from the supplier in their bedding. I pull out as many crawlers as I feel need for a day and put them in a smaller “12 pack” cooler and try to get as much bedding off them as I can. The ones with the fully removable top (not the side tilt ones) seem to work best because they seal better when locked and worms can’t climb to freedom.

Take a few newspapers, paper towels, or some other paper that has been wetted down. I find water from the Wigwam Resorts works the best A couple moist towels on the bottom, and a couple on the top will keep as many crawlers as a guy can use comfortable for the day. If it is hot, throw a Ice pack over the top and you are set.

    LOL
Sounds even better than when I told the wife you keep leeches on your leg to keep them fresh and well fed.

    Good one.

Until you posted the “on a serious note” part I actually believed you. After all I can see you doing such a thing, so it would not have shocked anyone.

    Hey, I resent that.

OK, I don’t really. I had to post the second post because I should not have shared all my top tricks. I got to keep my secrets

Having others in the boat keep a dozen or two in their mouths.

    Ok…seriously.

I just dump the flat into a 5 gal pail and make sure it stays out of the sun and/or doesn’t freeze. Need a towel by the bucket for this routine.

I know some put a few in their live well was just a little water to wash off the dirt. That works too.

I’ve always gotten my crawlers at Vados and never had to deal with black dirt getting all over my boat like I see some guys do. Sure, a little bedding material gets here and there, but mostly dries up and blows away on the drive home. Vados packs their crawlers with a ice-pack wrapped in a brown paper bag which keeps the crawlers cool and moist the whole trip. One other thing, even in my best season up there I’ve never needed more than half a flat for two guys fishing three days. I think a lot of guys could get away with bringing a half flat, but then I don’t use left-over crawlers much after that trip so I don’t like having extra.

While I see where your coming from, and Valdos has great bait, a quick check shows 250 crawlers from Valdos is $38 and for $44 you can get 500 from Adrians, not sure but it seems Adrians is a much better deal.

    Just a thought.

That’s a great idea. I’m going to have to try that.

On a not so serious note, my mom always feared doing my laundry when I was a young ‘un because I used to pick up any worms I found and put them in my pockets so I could use them for fishing later.

I don’t see why a fella couldn’t shove a few dozen crawlers in his pockets when his cheeks get full.

If Holst can put minnows in his snow suit pockets for fishing walleyes, I don’t see anything wrong with your thoughts lhprop1.

The only reason he doesn’t put the minnows in his mouth is because he has to sound like he’s making sense on camera.

I would agree…but he’s bigger than me. I’ve seen him staple his tie to his chest.
