So it is getting to be about that time of year to start targeting very early season channel cats on open water. With the river levels going up, just wanted to see what everyone’s opinion is on where/how to target them.

    Stink bait or cut?
    Deep or shallow?
    Structure or channel?
    Etc.

    What are your thoughts?

Well first of all a channel is structure…

Definitely cut bait or semi-living minnows bunched on a hook. Spring finds them feasting on minnows thawing out after being frozen in the ice and minnows dying with the changes to the water.

I wish I could get out of work tomorrow.

I might have to hit a few places this weekend for fun.

I was hoodwinked into working this weekend…but I do have some video of “I almost have a bite!” coming soon.

I have three location on P4 that I want to get out to…without an underwater camera but with a fishing pole.

In my mind cut slice of sucker will be the bait although I can’t ever go out without a few live fatheads.

Maybe I can talk to the controling factors and an evening trip is in order(?)

Anyone fish at night on Pool 4??

They’re going pretty good on 4 right now.

I’m looking for someone to take along, but just not sure who.

Hey Brian – thanks too for spooling up the new line for me on Sunday – too bad John was trying to use his backwards .

I never put down the rods with the 832 again so I did not see if mine was ok or not.

He checked before he left the bait shop! Or so I thought.

Quick fix…just stand in front of the reel when retrieving…casting isn’t a problem.

I love the early season day bite here. Once the lake opens here you can really tear them up. I run a crawler, a stink bait, and a cut bait and let them tell me what they want. bigger fish generally like the stink bait. I’ve had them all over that stuff in 40 degree water. Some days you can get 50 fish. I have found using a draggin jig works pretty good here for prespawn cats. I am off today in support of our teachers and other public employees. I love democracy. There were 10,000 plus people screaming at our Gov today.

    3/0 circles
last falls left over sucker that are in the freezer
    fatheads live and dead
    I hate microwaving stink bait…but…

I’m leaving the ThermoCell home for a while yet. Which reminds me, I need refills for this summer.

The FW and I picked up or reupholstered arm rests for the boat last night. $20 for both and they look like new!

The portable bait tanks (cooler) is going to get some work this year. I’m taking the advice you guys gave me and dumping the bubblers and moving to an outside of the tank pump…with a bubbler for back up.

We had some good size channels on the camera the other day, 5 pounderish.

Well if he cats and walleyes aren’t biting, I hope the other fish I know that gather down there will. I think we have about 3 weeks and she’ll open up or at least start. It can be fun fishing between the ice chunks.
