Stinkbait

So I work at Goodwill in Hudson, WI, and we get a lot of commercial products from stores like Kmart and Target (out of season stuff and stuff they couldn’t otherwise sell).

We got some Sonny’s stinkbait in a while ago, and I bought it all for $1.50 a container (7 containers). The only catch is that it’s pretty dry and dark compared to fresh stuff. The label says to add vegetable oil, but is it still going to be as effective after I do that?

Yes.All that dried out for the most part is the oils.
Bk does have a taste testing service you might want to try.He pays YOU for a taste.

If you can find it, use soybean oil in place of the vegetable oil. I know veg oil will have a little soy oil in it but you want the 100% stuff.

Didn’t know that Herb, good advice. My friend Hillbilly Dave puts in limburger cheese when he can find it and he swears by it.

Wouldn’t limburger cheese tighten a person up and not loosen it?

He’s the only one that swears by it Mossy…or stands close to it…or is anywhere near it.

That stuff makes Sonny’s smell like rose buds.

Sonny’s is a good base to add stuff to. Like Limburger, rotten eggs, and rotten clam meats. As long as it doesn’t explode and you can keep the dogs away from it, the sky is the limit to what you can add.

I am pretty sure the ‘cracker test’ needs to be employed here Mike. This test consists of letting the Sonny’s warm up to room temperature, then dipping a Wheat Thin in it. If the cracker breaks off, add oil. If not, eat the cracker and go fishing!

I am curious why soy oil over vegetable oil?

For an oil additive to stink bait I was thinking about trying some fish oil. They sell it as an organic fertilizer and the stuff is exactly what the name implies- cold pressed fish oil. For about $12/16 oz it might be worth a try. Stuff smells something wicked fishy.

When I used to salmon fish in Door County WI, i heard about people getting in trouble for spraying their baits with WD-40… Apparently there’s fish oil in it.

Hey Mike! Can you drop some across the street at the hospital? I’ll take a look and get back to you. For fish oil, you can sometimes get the suppliment capsules for cheap depending on how much you need and how dedicated you are about opening capsules.

You could probably squeeze alot of fish oil out of 6 24″+ walleyes too. Oh never mind, that would ruin the stink bait.

If there is fish oil in it, there is not much.

Ok here is a secret ingriediant.
Fill a quart jar half full of worms top off with fatheads or shad.Place cap on tight, set in sun for about 1 month or until it has turned into liquid add slowly to sonnys or other stink bait.
Sounds gross,is gross but calls cats in for miles.

I’ll just say soybean oil from commercial fishing experience.
Another good oil to add has already been mentioned and that is fish oil. But the best I have found comes from trap supply dealers such as Minn. Trapline Products. It’s pure, clean oil with no flesh particles or blood.

One thing about catfish bait, the rottener it smells and the more it rolls your stomach the better it works. Dry Heaves Catfish Bait Company, your nose will know!…….and so will the catfish. I can see BK now thinking up a new formula.

Ill have to think of some containment methods. I hike into a bunch of places on the Minnesota, with my tackle in a back pack. I think any of these formulas would render my pack to the fire.

Hey Herb I was just thinking, sardines packed in soybean oil would be a pretty good source. Put in some Limburger, garlic powder, rotten shad guts or well ripened anyway, and some commercial soy cake in a jar of Sonnys or Bowkers and you’d be good to go but you’d have to have the washer on the back porch or in the garage befor you came in the house. Buy an old blender at Goodwill and put that in the garage too. Pack it in a jar with the lid cracked and set it in the sun for a few days and a guy would be good to go.

Mike – I would recommend adding some commercial fish oil rather than vegetable oil. There are a lot of different fish oil fish attractants available on-line that should do the trick. Catfish Connection sells Menhaden Fish Oil which can be added to stink baits to enhance them. A quart sells for $14 and comes in a plastic squeeze bottle. It is listed as Item Number: WMMOQ

Here is what the product info says:
MENHADEN OIL IS AN EXCELLENT ADDITION TO YOUR FISHING ARSENAL. THE OIL IS REFINED SO IT RETAINS THE NATURAL ATTRACTANTS. THE OIL IS ALSO FILTERED TO REMOVE ANY LARGE PARTICLES AND IS TREATED WITH AN ANTIOXIDANT TO KEEP IT
    FRESH AND READY TO USE.

Come on Joe, when has stink ever stopped us? If we could have harvested the liquid at the bottom of your boat at Evert’s last year, we’d be millionaires..

Thanks, a lot of great ideas here. Since I picked up enough of the stuff, I think I’ll try a combination of methods. Then I’ll have to bring it to BK for the taste test…

The good dip baits (sonny’s, cat tracker, even dunkers) will last pretty long. Just adding the soybean oil has been enough to revitalize any that i’ve had lying around… i’m sure the fish oils mentioned wouldn’t hurt.
