Completely unrelated to anything catfishing, I am in need of a new credit card! Actually, I want to pay off my current one (from my bank) and get a better one that has perks. I started Googling the subject but as you could imagine that got messy. So since most of you have more life experience than me and I assume know more about these things… What, in your opinion, is the best credit card w/ perks?

Unless you fly or rent cars don’t carry a card. More money in your pocket in the long run.

There is no such thing. If you can’t walk up and pay for it you don’t need it.

Well I can see already there is a bit of opposition to credit cards around.

However, if used correctly credit cards are a useful tool.

I use a Cabelas Signature Visa. The account pays me in Cabelas Bucks for the purchases made on the card. It pays 1% for all purchases, 2% at Cenex gas stations and 3% on Cabelas purchases. I use this card quite a bit for business purchases and have been able to get alot of toys from Cabelas at no cost to me. I’m not sure what interest they charge because I have never paid it. I pay my card off in full each month.

If you are going to carry a balance there are likely lower interest cards out there. Then you may be getting into that if you can’t pay for it you don’t need it scenario. Credit card interest, fees and penalties can be brutal.

I have a Capitol one card. We use all the perks for airline tickets. It worked great for this for many years but vacations have been very few the last couple of years. Been using my Cabelas card more recently. Its easy to use those points on every day stuff.

Keep in mind with any card a missed or late payment will quickly off set any type of perk you are getting from them. Even interest paid on a card most likely will be greater than any perks you get.

I do the same thing. CC can be great tools But u had better be very disciplined with the card. As you can imagine you can find yourself in trouble quick. When I use my cabelas CC I pay my monthly bills with it and then pay it off at the end of the month. Not only does this pay you back a little but it is great for your credit. However you have got to know what you can pay for and what you can not beyond your bills; if you are using it to purchase other items with this.. Hope this helps and remember not everyone should own a CC it can a great tool but sometimes it is a tool that will bury you

I’ve been a Cabela’s Club Visa customer for the past 10 years and always pay the balance off every month. Can’t beat the Cabela’s bucks and coupons. It is the best credit card w/ perks IMO.

    I don’t own a single credit card.

You are better off without one.

All the rewards and perks cost real money to the company or to the businesses that is taking those cards. Everyone of us ends up paying mor for goods and services because of all the card swiping going on. Cash on the barrel is the way to go.

And the others that mentioned Cabelas credit card. All good points and there is one that is frequently missed. If you have a credit card and pay off the balance on time it affects your credit rating in a positive manner. If you pay cash for everything it really can affect your credit rating in a negative manner (lower rating). Just my 2 cents. And yes I work for a bank.

I agree…I’ve had the same card since 1994. It is with citibank. I get a percentage of my purchases back in the form of a check. I’ve never carried a balance on it and have worked hard to keep my credit score in the low 800’s. Credit cards are not the problem. It only becomes a problem when people see it as free money and carry extravagant balances. I’m lucky to have $15,000 at hand in cases of emergency, but hope I never have to use it.

Most of the creditcards that are offering perks, require an exorbinate amount of credit points to buy diddly… Go for a low interest first. Mine is 7% on Capital One Card, and 9%on a American Express Card. The express card is good for using for airmiles…Capital One no good for buying perks but low interest.
When you call to get a rate, try to dicker with them, we didnt get 7% by their offering it, we had to barter…

I don’t know what the best is. Thought about this a couple of years ago and got an Amazon card. It’s easy to buy a lot of random but needed things there. From table saws to underwear to toilet paper. I did free shipping. We can redeem whenever it accumulates $25.

I don’t think it’s been mentioned yet Mal, but make sure you check into any “balance transfer” charges when switching to a new card.

I haven’t done this since we stopped using pebbles for coins but it took me by surprise.

Thats were to start.Don’t ”carry” a balance. Its a bill that should be payed when it comes like any other before you incure interest or penalties.Cash is king. When some thing is more than you have in your pocket, you know you can’t afford it.Also some businesses will discount if you don’t use a card.Reward cards like Cabelas are good for perks. My insurance co.offers to use cc payment. That and gasoline with a few other unavoidable purchases gets me a few hundred dollars at Cabelas a year.

Color me shocked to see that so many people are against credit cards

I put every expense I have on a US bank flexperks card. It is better than the Cabelas card on anything other then Cabelase purchases, but I don’t remember the percent off the top of my head, I just know the wife and I did a comparison a few months ago to see which to put some larger expenses on.

Now I have never paid a credit card company one bloody cent. The card is paid off every month religiously. I really don’t care what the interest rate is because it is paid off each month. IMHO a credit card is not for borrowing money, but for convience.

Just noticed the “I want to pay off my current one” from your question. If you are carring a balance do not get a Cabelas or most likely any other store card. Sears, Gander ect. Most of them I have seen include very high interist rates. Think my Cabelas is 24%. 18% is low for a lot of these cards. With intersit rates like that you are most likely going to be money a head just buying what you need.

If you are going to carry a balance on a credit card refer back to Lens comment.

Here is some clasic older person advise. Learn to set a household budget, stick to it and you will end up with the things you want. Due a little research on line and Im sure there are some great sites that show simple household budgeting.

If it were me I would be looking into a fuel card that pays cash back. Everyone NEEDS gas and it is only going to get more expensive, so why not use whatever advantage they give ya?

I once upon a time had a Cabelas card. I thought I was earning “free” stuff, but in all honesty that card was just a hook to get me in the store and ended up costing me more money. Whenever I went to get my “free” stuff I always saw something else I “needed” that wasn’t free! Live and learn.

Now, all I have is my bank issued debit card and it serves me well. I can make reservations, buy stuff on-line, do whatever a regular credit card does…except spend more than I have

If you are carrying a balance paying off this balance should be priority #1. I use mine exclusively for the rewards and pay off the balance every month so not to pay any interest. With that being said and to answer your question the best card per Money Magazine is:

Here is their list including the one’s with the best perks.

I’ve been taking out loans since I was 16ish or so and have paid them all off. Got a bank credit card, used to pay it off every month but then life got a lil rocky and it’s stacked. Only a $500 card though, maybe 400 on it.

I applied for a card at target before Christmas and got denied. Hence the new credit card search. Mike says a bank card doesn’t do shizz credit wise and I need a real card. (And I do plan to use and pay off every month as not to carry a balance. Also, I am not one of those people that see it as “free money”)
