If you only had one day to go catfishing all year, what day would you choose for the best possible success (channels and/or flatheads)?

For example: May 1st, August 30th….sometime in Winter

Just curious, since theres not much going on in the forum other than random babble.

From prior experience, I say 6/25, knock on wood.

I’d be on the Red River of the North on… umm… May 18th? I can’t choose an exact date, but it’s when the call comes from the river telling me to get my butt loaded up and headed that way!

The day after the ice goes out on the river. A jar of shad guts with the boat anchored above a wintering hole.

I don’t have an exact day, but one of the first couple weeks in June when the air temp is around 80 degrees at 2 in the morning. (this doesn’t happen too often)

The fishing is pretty darn good and the ride home is in a tee shirt and PFD. I LOVE it!

I’d have to say that one magical spring day right after ice out on the river when the channels have just turned on and are aggressively hitting everything. Just what the doctor ordered after a long winter in mothballs.

    or

A nice warm June night camping out on the Minnesota with a couple cold ones and some consistent action.

June 10th, and hoping for slightly humid conditions with a front approaching at about 11pm. You’ll find me anchored near the mouth of a creek casting to the downside of it, and bait placed strategically on a current seam.

A few years ago one night, all the planets lined up for us (as described above) and in the matter of a few hours we boated 22 Flats!

I might never see a double and a triple in the same hour ever again….but I’ll keep trying.

Me too Matt. Red River around mid May. Hold on tight, your going to need it. 100 fish days aren’t out of the question. If you have never been there, don’t wait. There is nothing like it. (Except maybe a huge sturgeon.)

I’d say June 22nd, it will be a Wednesday, so there will be very few people on the water, and conditions should be prime by then!

    Where’s down here?

Sounds like the St Croix River…but that would have to be October/November!

i would say about may 25th. when the big girls start to move into the timber from the deep water. that early bite has always been good to me. unless mudcat is pounding on all my spots [cuz in my mind i own the river].

It happens! No, you didn’t mention you hate snow.

90 days and we’ll be thinking about getting the bait tanks ready!

Not sure I can wait that long… However I have some giant goldfish
that are just waiting to be used as cut bait, they be swimin
aroun the back pond (bait-tank) as we speak.

Can you use them as cut bait?

I never caught anything on them. Of course I fish in bad places mostly.

My chubs from november are still kicking. It’s an experiment at this point.

Ice fishing is not interesting. A couple of dudes in a tent, a heater, a bottle of wine, etc. Why don’t they make the tents clear? HUH?

    Wine? Who are you?

Even the GF knows that ice fishing should be changed to be called beer drinking.

It doesn’t matter where, when or how. If I’m fishing, it’s a good day.
