I haven’t been on pool 2 and had the entire boat have no luck at all… until last night. We tried a half-dozen spots all south of 494 and north of Koch (all my top producers) and we had one nice clicker run that dropped the sucker, a whole bunch of nice pulls and tugs on the cut, and just generally a lot of good sign… but no hookups, no real solid bites, nada. Even the sucker that got pulled on hard turned out to have been chomped only halfway up its body.

I could maybe have gotten that one had I given it some time but we were in a severely snaggy area and I didn’t want to risk losing it in the timber. It’s always a balancing act I guess.

I’m a bit distressed, anyway. I’m going to have to start venturing the other direction or a bit further to get on fish, start getting out earlier so I have some daylight to explore, and just plain start hitting some new spots!

I’ll never give up on the old ones tho… they’ve been good to me.

This time of year I’ve experience the “gar run”.

A run long enough to get out of your seat but nothing there when the rods picked up. Sometimes the sucker has marks, other times it’s just gone.

Really? Cuz yeah, that’s about the size of it.

It was along a ledge up against the edge of the channel in about 15 FOW, too… under a massive collection of logjam.

    Totally, dude.

So is there any better way to rig to target them since they’re there and doing bad things to our bait anyway?

Tape the loop side of velcro tape to both sides of the sucker?

I had the same problem on the St Croix. Perfect eddie created by rocks just South of the Kinni. Six suckers later I gave up.

DirkW said GAR you sucker! Well, he enlightened me on gar attacks anyway.

Interesting. I had no idea that I’d be dealing with gar, I thought they started up south of the Croix… cool, I think.

I’d sure like to hook into one tho. Man, what a fight…

you can try a rope lure, plenty of information out on the net on how to catch Gar. Try roughfish.com also.

These gar aren’t the big gators like BK catches on hie exotic adventures down south. They are almost all under 3-4 lbs. If you want to catch them and have em put up a fight, better use panfish or walleye gear.

Agree with you big A. The gar I’ve seen in the summer have all been under 4 pounds.

Just need to figure out where these larger short nose gar are hiding in the summer.
