My dad dropped my husband off at 12:30 this afternoon at Somerset Landing (in somerset, wi) with our boat (because, of course, we are still truckless) in hopes of getting a site on an island. And they were all taken!! I couldn’t believe it I was soo looking forward to it. I haven’t gotten to go camping all summer and I just want to be able to catfish. My dad is off picking up my husband right now, and I am searching the internet in hopes of finding campground along the river with no luck. Obviously, we will not have our boat so I was hoping for some shoreline fishing. Does anyone know any places? We live in River Falls, WI.

14ft john boat. He was between the Somerset and Osceola landing. They have designated primitive campsites on certain islands in that stretch to camp on any other one is illegal I believe. I think there is 14 but none were open

Yeah, the NPS has royally fudged this stretch of the river up. There are 17 primitive campsites available between Interstate Park and the High Bridge near Stillwater. I went North towards Osceola landing and made it about 3/4, and all of the campsites were taken.

Not only are there only 17 campsites, but you need a permit to camp there as well (in there defense, it’s free, and it only took 3 days to get it by mail)

How can you plan a weekend fishing/camping trip when there’s no way to ensure you’ve got a place to stay… Not to mention, no boat traffic is allowed to pass beneath the high bridge, which cuts off the islands towards Hudson. And you can camp on any of those islands, but it’s a lot harder to find a place to park all night…

Maybe try north of Taylors falls. Lots of sites up that way even up past governor knowls state forest. There are supposed to be cats up that way to.

Most river camping spots are taken Wed or Thurs before a holiday weekend by tents, tarps and chairs long before they arrive. Not really legal but thats how it works.

I’ve camped up there plenty… The river is wide and relatively shallow, but there are no flatheads north of the damn…

If anyone is interested, check out Sunrise Landing (just south of Governor Knowles). It’s pretty awesome, and there is one great spot on the river. Groups of channel cats used to like to hang out about 25 feet off shore and 25 feet south of the camp site… They got pretty sizable too.

Yanno, you two are a bit confusing with you both posting off the same account.

Sorry, I got nothing worthwhile to add, just making that observation.
