So I read the DNR book and now am even more confused. What is legal to use as bait and can you have more than one rod out? Stupid question I know but I want to get into night cattin and havent done it in over 10 years dispite many logged hours on the river.

    Thanks

To rods per person. Bullheads or suckers for bait. Always smile.

    Did that answer your questions?

I didn’t know it was possible not to smile whilst on the river at night.

It was rumored on the internet that there were some that didn’t smile, but I checked it out on Snopes and it listed it as untrue.

That depends on the skeeters Brian and I don’t mean the boat. I like those Skeeters!

With a Sconnie license it’s 3 rods. You can use any fish you catch as bait, it just needs to be of legal size, and it counts against your daily bag limit…

And as a MN resident, you can’t buy a Sconnie license to fish the Miss border water. You are stuck following MN regulations.

I suppose that has something to do with the reciprocity agreement, such that MN fishermen can’t buy a WI license if there’s a reciprocity agreement in place… it’s sort of one or the other.

You got a Minnesota license? Err, no, you said a Sconnie license… can’t help there, I’m from MN.

I’d like to know the answer too tho!

The difference is that you could be using three poles on the croix as well, or at least in the fishing regulations it doesn’t specify otherwise… In the beginning of the regs it says, “It is illegal to fish with more than three hooks, baits, or lures.” The Wisconsin-Minnesota boundary water section doesn’t say anything otherwise…

One of the interesting things about the WI-MN relationship is that you can shore fish from either shore, although in that case you have to abide by the laws of the state in which you’re fishing… That being said, I do believe if fishing from shore, a MN resident fishing from the WI side can use three lines…

From the regs booklet, page 58, online edition:

    WISCONSIN–MINNESOTA Regulations
    • Two lines with a single lure or bait on each are permitted. If fishing with one line you may use two baits.

Oh, wait, Mike, were you speaking from the perspective of a WI resident?

So as MN licensee, I can fish 2 lines from a boat or 3 lines from shore on the WI side?

That’s… weird. Kinda cool, but still weird.

I am speaking from a WI resident’s perspective… The reason I believe you can fish from the Sconnie side with a MN license and three lines is as follows: I fish at Somerset Landing in MN on the St Croix every once in a while, so I called the WI DNR just to make sure I was doing everything ok.

They told me that you need to follow the laws for the state in which your fishing (and I don’t know if they were implying the license you carry, but if that’s what they meant, they should have said it.)

And yeah, unless I’m wrong, we’re allowed 3 lines in WI.

    Sooooo….

Would that mean if I had a WI d/l and drove from WI (speed limit 65) over the bridge into MN (speed limit 75), I could still drive 75 mph in MN? I have a WI license and it’s 75mph on the WI side.

    Just wonderun.

So am I wrong to think I need a Sconi license to fish on the Wisconsin shore of the Miss or St Croix?

Yes, you would be wrong to think that.
