Fishing cats on wing dams?

Just curious if anyone has tips on fishing wing dams? There is an area on the Minnesota between Mankato and St.Peter with 3 or 4 in a 1/2 mile stretch of the river. The downstream side has been scoured really deep, so I’m thinking they might be hot in late summer. So far I haven’t hit anything there in the few times I’ve been able to fish them. The 4-10″ rip rap they dumped in to construct the wing dams gets a bit snaggy if you aren’t careful.

Just try fishing for walleyes and you will catch all the small channel cat you want.

Both of these catfish were caught on wingdams.

2 different wing dams but in the exact same spot on the dam. Almost directly off the tip… Both had pretty good flow over them and were no deeper than 7fow

swollen goat, that is one funny handle. those wing dams sound like great spots to me. i think i would try the tip, middle [on the downstream side] and throw one bait right up in about 2 feet of water where it meets the shoreline. wing dams can produce fish all season long.

I was looking through some cat magazines last night and they said during the day flats will sit off the tip and at night move shallow on the upstream side.

Have you fished the area often? It is just south of St.Peter off of hwy 169. I caught 3 cats there a couple of weeks ago, but the river is up about 2-3 feet since then. If you are going to be in the area some evening, let me know. I just caught a mess of bullheads and have them in a tank. I live within 15 minuets of several good shore spots on the Minnesota.

Suckerslayer, I don’t get it, am I supposed to use the walleyes for bait?

No you are supposed to try and catch walleyes, thats when I can’t keep the cats off my line.

Sorry Suckerslayer, I thought you were kidding about the walleyes. When is the DNR gonna do something about them, interrupting our quality time in pursuit of the noble catfish?
