Caught her in about 4 FOW in a logjam at the mouth of small inlet that forms an island… gotta love the upstream ends of island channels.

Anyway, she went 43×27, estimated 39-42 lbs.

    OH H3LLZ YEAH!

Thanks, Jakob, for dragging me out there, bringing the bait and taking the pictures. I had a really good time!

4 fow!? Nice! They don’t like getting hooked up in that shallow of water!

    Congrats!

So you bumped your PB by about 30 pounds in one night?

Well my PB was 17#, so I slightly more than doubled it. PB channel cat is 10#, but PB flat was actually 16.75#.

As for the water we were in, the upstream end of this island is surrounded by deadfall, and the water goes from 15-20 feet in the main channel up to about 4 feet at the tip of the island in about one boat length. That 4′ depth maintains for about 200′ up to the bank… so there’s a lot of debris in shallowish water bordering some really deep water with a few decent scour holes in it.

Catching that fish shallow was an interesting experience tho… she _really_ wanted to spend some time directly under my boat trying to tie herself off to the transceiver or the lower unit. Crazy fish!

    Thanks all!

Sam, no… if you ate a fish that size out of the river you’d grow a third testicle… on your forehead. Pollution bites.

Besides, a fish that size is top-shelf breeding stock and the meat’s not so much too good. I’d rather eat a few 5-pounders instead.

Nope. We changed spots a few times, but there didn’t seem to be much else going on in that stretch of river.

Still tho… gorgeous night, hanging out on the river drinking a few beers and staring up at the stars… you can’t beat it! Unless, that is, your boat has a bbq grill and a refrigerator. Then you can.

Biggest fish I’ve ever caught… before now it was probably a 4 or 5# Northern.

    I can’t believe I busted the 40# fish mark… where to go next??? 65#!! w00t!

Great fish! I do love those pole benders.

Four FOW conforms to the wood in the water rule. No matter how shallow, give it a try if there is serious wood in the current.

Congratulations on the new PB. That must have been a lot of fun fighting him in 4 fow.
The last 2 times out we have been invaded by gar. They are real hard on bait.
I did manage my own pb on May 29 it was 37 in long and weighed 28 lbs

ASAP and I think I was using a 6″ or so bullhead. I had suckers in the boat but I ended up saving those for this weekend. Jakob had to get us the bullies cuz my bullhead hotspot died out. Frizzackin winterkill.

Well, the boat was anchored in about 5-6 FOW. Just downstream off the stern was a hole that went down to about 8 FOW. And the water where the deadfall was all stacked up was about 2-4 feet deep depending on where you were fishing. So I cast into and caught him in 4 FOW but he moved to deeper water once I hooked into him… I was more afraid of the lower unit getting tangled than anything cuz I was fighting him JUST behind the boat and he kept trying to go under it.
