Jakob and I are taking my ‘toon out on the river tonight. The only thing I didn’t get was a marine radio, but with 2 cells and a CB on board we should be covered. Actually it’ll be 2 cells, cuz the CB isn’t installed yet.

Anyway… wish me luck, it’s my first night trip with this boat on the river.

You guys take it easy out there. Recommend heading upstream if you haven’t run the toon on the water yet.
River levels are up, so it the velocity/current. Keep an eye out for debris.
Good luck and Knock em dead.

I guess should’ve been clearer with the title/first post… this is her maiden NIGHTTIME voyage, and her first “real” catfish voyage. I’ve actually had it on the river before, just never at night looking for cats. I had my dad out with me the first time, and I caught a big stringer of white bass on walleye opener just to nyeh at the walleye guys.

Here’s to Mother Nature sending us some big, fat beasties tonight!

I can’t raise Jakob on the SMS, but I’ll put up the picture I took with my cell of the picture he took with his camera in a few mins.

Be careful with that… Pug holds a grudge. Now, every time I post I have to quadruple-check my spelling and grammar. Try to help a guy out once and what do you get but guff.

Sure, blame it on me taking your spot.

Yeah, that’s right… blame it all on me. It’s a burden I’ll gladly bear since it’s my picture up there.

I finally got my boat out for her actual maiden voyage on the 26th. I don’t have a truck yet, so we had to use my buddy’s… Fishing was all right, but we didn’t catch anything worthwhile until about 8:30 pm (after 8 hours of fishing).

She’s a 14′ Alumacraft jon boat with an older 10 hp Evinrude. I’ve got her decked out with decking but not much for technology in the boat, just a couple of idiots…
We landed out of Somerset Landing on the St Croix and motored about 3/4 a mile up til the river split in 4 where we found a pretty secluded 40′ wide stretch and parked in the current. We fished fished the edge of the current, where my buddy caught a 2/3 lb channel on cut bait and a baby sturgeon. Then at 9, the lightning moved in, so we got out of there…

All I ended up with 3 sheephead and a carp. The carp was worth the fight, and my boat floated

That’s the start of many more trips to come!

Keep us posted on you trips. We don’t have anyone reporting from up that was since Mike W started….can I say it…walleye guiding.

Just stay away from those walleyes. Nothing good will come of it.

But isn’t that the mostest gooderest feeling, heading out into the water in your own boat?

    I think it is!

It’ll be an even betterer feeling when I have my own truck to pull it with

Nope, that one was Mike. But it would be nice to get my car back! You sit and there is a cloud of concrete dust…not to mention all the tools and rocks that have taken over (and the smell)

Mike, what kind of car do you have? Your boat sounds small enough that you could pull it with just about anything with a reasonable engine, say high 150+ horses. I have a 2001 impala that pulled our 1972 15 foot aluminum starcraft with 50 horse merc on it just great! Until I got rid of that boat, I would usually use the car even though I did end up buying a truck, just because it was so much cheaper to drive. Of course I used the truck for my bigger boat. But towing that little guy, I could get 27-28 mpg with the impala (got 28 on the final trip with that boat, from Carver, MN to Watertown, SD where I gave the boat to my cousin).

We got a “hidden hitch” trailer hitch for under 200 bucks, and it doesn’t look out of place on there at all. Just remove the ball from the receiver when not in use.

We have an 04 Hyundia Tiburon, and I don’t doubt it’s ability to pull the boat… There just isn’t much clearance between the bumper and the ground, but I’ll check into it.

Go to a U-Haul joint or a Pep Boys. They specialize in installing trailer hitches on about anything. It’ll probably only be a class 1 or 2 hitch, but on a car for just pulling a boat around, bfd.

Just for reference, I had a trailer hitch installed on my 1998 Taurus GL in 2001 to be able to pull a 14′ SmokerCraft with a 35HP motor on it. Sadly, I never could find a motor I could afford at the time, so I ended up selling the boat. BUT, the hitch worked perfectly and they were able to put it on a Taurus, which is too low to the ground to get under without jacking and has a unibody to boot.

They can get a hitch on your Tiburon, trust me.
