Two Old River Rats

On Friday, Riverfan and I met for the first time in person after months of correspondence through IDO. We hopped into my little river boat for a tour of my favorite stretch of Mississippi River. We left the Clearwater landing about 7:00 AM and went all the way to St. Cloud. Our first stop was my best hole on the river which produced nary a bite. Isn’t that the way it works when you are trying to show somebody how good your favorite hole is?

That was just a little blip in the road however as the cats soon warmed up early and often. The two in the picture were pretty average for what we caught all day. The early bite went to night crawlers, but soon switched to cut bait and stayed that way the rest of the day.

We lost track along the way, but thought we caught between 30 and 40 cats for the day. Riverfan caught two smallies and I caught a six inch northern that attacked a worm when I was reeling up after a missed strike.

IDO is such a great place to get information and meet new wonderful people. Thanks for a great day John.

Gotta go now, I’m headed for pool 4 for the day. BK, did you leave any of those bigguns around?

You hit the nail on the head when you spoke of your favorite fishing hole. Thirty or forty doesn’t matter you guys were catching.

Always wanted to try that stretch for cats. Not a ton of fishing pressure up that way. A buddy and I are talking about taking a canoe all the way from Cloud to the Coon Rapids Dam.

Looks like a fun day out there guys!

I’ve fished from 101 to the rest stop on 169 out of a canoe and almost lost it a couple times… But we caught some REALLY nice smallies in that stretch tossing Mr. Twisters into eddies. Lots of shallow water, but lots of good cat habitat in that stretch too.

Congratz on the grt day fishing!

If you try that stretch of river, please use something with a shallow draft. I have a 14′ john boat with a 23 hp Beavertail motor. A jet prop on a regular outboard, a canoe or kayak, or something like a RiverPro because it is really shallow in places. The other side of the coin is there are tons of fish and it only gets better as the summer goes along and the catfish fall out of love and the water heats up the bass.
