We hit a proven big fish spot last night, and about an hour into it, this little fella came to the net.

    45X31 Any guesses on weight?

Doc, your photo’s don’t show the length or girth in the measurements.

In my expert opinion, those measurements should make that fish weigh in around the high 40’s.

From the photo, I’m thinking it’s around 35.

I know photo’s can be deceiving.

BTW…I used “expert” above for the annoyance factor.

After taking into consideration the angle of the photo, comparing the fish to the rods and your glasses…

I’m going to re guess at 42.xx pounds.

A 45×31 will be high 40’s all day long, and I would agree with the 48 estimate, and with accurate measurements would be willing to put money on a 46 +/-2 lbs guess.

    Congrats, great fish!

    Nice catfish.

Don’t look now, but right behind you in pic#1 is a tool to weigh fish. If you hang the fish from it even briefly, you won’t have to guess.

Are you going to tell us after we’ve all had our chance to guess?

I’m going with 41 lbs. Which is 41 lbs larger than the flattie I boated this weekend. Does a 20 in channel on a 6 in bullhead count for anything?

    Nice fish for sure!

Based on the first photo I would guess 46lb +/- 1lb. I caught one with almost identical dimensions (45×30) last night and figured about 44 – 45lb. Never referenced a chart or weighed it to verify my guess though.

    Nice fish!

Compared to data from Pool 2, 45 inches is 2 inches longer than the biggest one I sampled in 2008, which was 50 lbs. My equation from over 100 fish puts the weight of a 45 incher around 44 pounds. HOWEVER, very few large fish were in my equation and girth was not included. Based on my regression line, weights for large fish are under estimated. I would say it’s every bit of 50 pounds.

It truly is all about the girth, and you would be hard pressed to find a MN catfish with a 31″ girth under 45lbs. Heck, finding a girth 30″ and over is hard enough They are pretty rare

Using the cheap Rapala scale I have, minus the net weight, it was 46lb. 2 oz.

East Metro…..I wonder if you are closer to the actual weight with your calculations….I caught a 45 last year, and to be hones this fish seemed clearly bigger….yet only just over a pound in actual weight…dont seem right to be honest. especially with the 31 in girth.

that was my scale, and it is a Berkley scale, not a cheap rapala one…

and besides, i doubt it could be off by that much. i weighed the net a few times and it was 3.10 everytime. unless the handle of the net was touching the boat in the heat of the moment. but we weighed it three times, and in the net we got 49.10 once and 49.12 twice. subtract 3.10 for the beckman – and 46.2 is the math i got.

i thought it was going to weigh more, but who knows.

the weight conversion table i have says it should be 49.x. so, i don’t know…

    2 things:

    1) where do you measure the girth of a flathead?

    2) NICE fish!

    Wait wait wait wait wait….

You caught fish while wearing a visor and jogging pants? I think there is some verbage in our current fishing regulations that were intended to keep that from ever happening.

AS a side note to lengths and weight… a few years back I caught a 48 inch Flat… longest Flat I’ve ever brought in the boat… but it only tipped the scales at 39lbs.
Girth does make a difference, but these fish are in ways like people, this one was very long and lean.. compared to some of the Stumps I’ve caught and seen.

Just for the record….Perch hangs out with ME…I DO NOT hang out with Perch. Theres a huge difference.

I think I will make the Jag visor my official Catfishing visor. Thanks MCK!
