Big cat mono

Just wondering what kind of knots work best for tying up big cat mono. I have got some 30 lb that I will be trying out at the sturgeon excursion this year and don’t want to lose a big fish due to a knot slipping. Never used this stuff before so any information on it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Steve.

The Palomar Knot is easy to tie correctly, and consistently the strongest knot known to hold terminal tackle.

I use the uni knot for the Berkley Big Game in 30 pound when I used it.

Whatever you’re the most comfortable with.

I don’t like snelling mono that heavy. Probably be just fine, but it’s so springy, I personally don’t have faith in snells (but I love them for lighter mono). I prefer the Uni, but will use the Palomar, too. I think the Uni is easier to snug up without melting the line.

    uni-snell

You can tie a uni-snell and put in a bag and it’s still tied when you take it out. I’ve tied a bunch and it is as fast as any other knot with practice.

I’d probably use a berkley knot if just tying on whatever hook on mono. Like Ralph said, I don’t feel a harmful amount of friction when pulling it tight.

If you’re worrying about line failing, set your drag with a scale. It’s more likely to be the source of failure unless you’re tying hooks on with granny knots.

I use 40lb Big Cat and have good luck with the Palomer but I also use a four wrap Trilene knot but it has to be wet before you slowly cinch it up.
