With the recent flooding of small streams and rivers, Ive been thinking about doing some cattin. The cannon river where I live is 1 foot from record level right now. I know Ive always done very well when the river floods in the summer, but with it being this cold do you think it would be worthwhile to get out with some cutbait? Ive caught them as early as midApril before, but not too sure about March. What u think?

Looking back at our pictures from last year – we have pictures of channels as early as February in to early march when there was still snow on the ground.

Channels feed all year round – I would give it a try

    You Betcha!

As Dtro’s videos show the channels bite all winter.

If there’s more than one of you, don’t be afraid to try a little stink bait on a cut in half tube either. Let the fish tell you what they want.

If there are any areas on the Cannon near you that have dark bottom back waters with slow(er) flow, check them out. These areas warm faster than other areas.

There’s others on this site that have more first hand knowledge of the Cannon than I do. I’m sure they’ll chime in here.

The channels and neck down areas around Wells and Cannon lakes might be worth a try. The dams in Faribault will probably be pretty tough to fish with the water being this high, but if you can find any current breaks, you may have some luck there as well. When the water is this high and fast, slack water and current breaks probably hold the majority of the fish, especially this time of year when metabolisms and energy are low, and the water is extremley cold from all this melt run off.

Any decent size to the cats in the Cannon? I was thinking of giving it a try this spring but had no idea there are cats in there – now I’m going to have to try for sure!

Biggest kitty Ive got outta there was 13 lbs, so no, I guess they dont get too big. But if youre into eating the small ones, theres plenty for that.
