Mother Nature’s way of cleaning the river and changing things up at the same time.

The snags that were aren’t and new snags forming.

    Thanks for sharing Darren.

What kind of bait and technique would you use there?

That looks just like it was in Saint Peter and Le Sueur a few days earlier. It’s ugly between Mankato and Jordan, for sure. Conditions are changing by the minute.

    Great video Darren.

This reminds me of the coolest thing I saw with a melt and it was one spring when I went up to Rice Creek in Fridley. There is an island a few hundred yards downstream of the mouth on the Mississippi and there where large flat flows of scattered ice. Those sheets would hit the point of the island with unbelievable power. It was fairly constant too, about every 5 minutes a big chuck would nail it and fold up chucks of ice as they broke off and the sound was pretty cool.

Nice video, by the size of most of the ice I wonder if that had come from along ways up river and the trip breaking it up. The bigger pieces were the size of what we had here a week ago, hardly any small ones, most were big.

Since the weather won’t be condusive to fishing (much) this Sunday, I might head out and film various places and take pictures. If anyone knows of good places to take shots of the river height and ice flows, let me know. Also, if you can steer me away from road closings. I assume Hidden Falls park is still open, even if the launch is closed. I also assume Blackdog Rd is closed and what part of Sheppard? Lilydale?

*Saw the link to WCCO in the other thread and see the parks will be closed. Anyone know how accurate this map is for roads closed due to flooding?

I don’t see any roads closed yet, that’s why I wonder.

Looks like you MN River guys will have a whole new complex of logjams when the water recedes……that, or all your nice log jams will be dowstream!

I think the latter, unless there is some bank erosion felling some big cotton woods to grab passing lumber. Either way, it is nice to see the deck shuffled once in a while.

    You’re probably right.

I will kindly accept all their timber. (As long as it doesn’t rip all my work equipment from the depths of the Mississippi!)

I think I am going to head down to the Lyndale launch this evening to get a peak at what is going on. I have a spot down there where I would gladly except some timber being deposited.

I kind of feel like I do when storm chasing. I am pretty excited about seeing this stuff, but then I feel bad for the people whose lives are affected because of property being destroyed or worse.
