Any big game users on here? Im looking for something with stretch for circle hooking channels this year. Wondering how heavy mono like 20# casts in comparison to my nice soft 80# power pro? How abrasion resistant is big game compared to power pro?

I run 30# PowerPro HiVis on all my channel cat rods and have never had any trouble with circle hook hookups. You don’t need to run mono for circle hooks to be effective.

I ran both power pro and 20 lb big game for a couple years and found I like the power pro better. It’s more abrasion resistant and cast just as good if not better for me.

It’s ok. Not the same but it has it’s strengths. Most people agree that mono is way more abrasion resistant. I spooled up some 40# last year when I got cut off 4 times one night when using braid. It worked btw.

I like to use mono on graphite poles. I think braid works better on fiberglass ones.

Also if you use a lot of weight and there is a lot of current, braid can vibrate audibly. I never catch any fish when it’s humming. Maybe that’s just spook but something I’ve noticed.

On small fish with a light rod and 6# mono, my hookup rate is better than any other rig but maybe true with all lighter stuff.

I know I am in the minority, but I like mono. I generally have a few reels spooled with 25 lb Big Game. I don’t think you need to go bigger than 25 lb or 30 lb–that stuff is tough!!!

It casts just fine on baitcasting reels, but I would not use it on a spinning reel.

I use a stiff fenwick for channels and i usually let them hook themselves in the rod holder and i had a scary moment last summer when i picked up a 25# flathead. so i was looking for a little give since my rod doesnt.

Yeah sometimes circles hook the fleshy corner of the mouth. On channels I don’t put more pressure on them than I need to because the odd hook can pop out. It feels weird catching them on braid, the thump thump grinding feeling makes me feel like the hook is going to come out but it’s certain days when the fish aren’t biting aggressively.

I like using 40-50 big game mono for my leaders… I use braid for my main line. I like the abrasion resistance and the little tiny bit it gives.

    That’s my experience too.

I’m with Larry on this one. This past winter when we where in Florida I picked up there clear heavey mono to make some leaders with like the do for salt water fishing down there.
Hopefully it work good this summer.
