It’s getting close to that time. I know it was slow last year, but maybe this year we’ll see a return to the more normal catch rates? Shouldn’t be much longer.

I hope they open up the gates like they did last year as I was able to get into some channels. I have it all logged, so I know what water levels to be looking for.

I drove over the 35W bridge several times this weekend (strangely, the first time since the new bridge was opened), and Mill Ruins was on my mind, too.

Do you do much cattin on the Minnesota Pug or do you stick to the Mississippi?

I hit both, but I prefer the Miss. The Minnesota has been tough on me for some reason. I just haven’t found any spots that are consistent…from shore anyway. This year I am bringing more gear and adjusting to whatever species the river is offering for good action on that particular day.

The lock looks pretty solid from the 35W bridge still, doesn’t it? I’ve been over Marshall 2 weekends ago when it was colder and it was pretty open north of the bridge. I wonder how Bohemian looks.

I’ve been thinking about the Ruins all week. My earliest cat from there last year was 3/11, and the year before it was 3/9. It shouldn’t be too long. My wife will be back at work, my son will be going to daycare, and I’ll finally have a couple of hours a week that can be spent on fishing. I have a bunch of frozen minnows just waiting for their turn on the circle hook.

It didn’t happen last year. I think it was a combo of it being a cold March, the fishing being off possibly from the draw down the season before and Fisher Dave the founder disappearing from the site.

Just drove down there the other day and thought to myself this woulda been the year to try and Ice fish the lock area.
To late now though for sure.

That would be a interesting experiment. I wonder though if the cops would kick you off. You know kids start seeing people walking on the ice and the next thing you know, they are doing it too.

I would imagine the Police could get you out of there a number of ways and rightfully so. I think the whole lock is a restricted area anyway.
A few years back we did drill some test hole’s and found over foot of decent Ice we planned on going but we just ended up going across the river to Honk-yor-Horn and fished open water which was much easier and safer.

I wonder if my buddy the raccoon still strolls through there. Someone has to clean up all the fish guts and remains you guys leave.

I need to hit the honk your horn spot this year. I still have not fished that spot. It’ll require a Sherpa for the first trip since I don’t know the rules or paths there.

Lot’s of critter tracks on the ice at Mill ruins some of them very LARGE.
I always watch my back at Honk-yor-horn and I’m not talking about Raccoons!

For what it’s worth, Pool 1 water temps for 2009 and 2010. I like the looks of 2010 better

Looks promising. I keep looking at 15 days forecasts hoping for a 50+ or 60 degree day out of the blue that might turn them on. Might have eye problems that day as in, I can’t see myself going into work that day.

Yup same problem here. IF it gets warm enough I got a lot of vacation banked for the wedding in Oct. But won’t need it all.

You have no idea. Now you know why Mike Iaconelli has never done his City Limits fishing show here. And he fishes in a boat…during the day.

I’ll just take the non-metro assignment.

Mill Ruins has to be starting to open up. The snow is melting really fast today and the warmer run off has to be wearing down the ice. To bad I can’t run up today and check.

the half closest to the dam is wide open but there is a huge sheet of ice blocking the flow out into the main channel

Sounds like she is close. I have fished up there in the past with the ice sheets still moving around in there and it is kind of a pain. Maybe clear by next weekend?
