Thank you Stuart
BK I think that video turned out fantastic. Next time I’ll hold back on the Vikings jokes though
and maybe the wind wont be blowing at gale force
February 9, 2010 at 5:48 pm #841016Nice work guys! best video yet
They sure don’t look too concerned with the camera….wonder what eats a gar?

Samething that eats large flatheads and Lake Sturgeon…people!
I watched a YT movie this morning on how to clean a gar…it was more like, how to shell a gar!
Hatchet, hack saw and a knife. Pealed out just like a shrimp out of a shell.
February 9, 2010 at 8:01 pm #841095Is there much current there? They seem to be facing in all directions. Anybody trying to catch them? I bet they would fight pretty good!

According to the Lake City folks of the DNR, they all appear to be Longnose Garfish.
Correction, I miss read my email. There are many shortnose gar there and might out number the longnose. Now if I could just tell the difference!
I don’t know of anyone that targets them in the winter and just a couple guys I know that target them in the summer.
It is in an area of low flow.
February 9, 2010 at 9:37 pm #841138Wow. Kinda looks like Colts fans Monday morning…or was it Vikings fans a week ago?
Seriously, what did these look like on your sonar?February 9, 2010 at 10:10 pm #841154I’ll have to leave that question for Jesse, I had my schnoz in the camera.
Gar ID 101
Quote:
Basically, the length and width of the snout is the best way to distinguish. This is what it says in the identification books.
Shortnose: short, broad snout.
Longnose: long, narrow snout, more than twice as long as rest of head.
Other than counting lateral line scales or gill rakers, size of snout is the best identification tool.
February 9, 2010 at 10:18 pm #841160By reviewing the video and by using the id info from above, I would say there’s a few state record shortnose gars there.
Gar, Shortnose 4 lbs-9.6oz
February 9, 2010 at 11:08 pm #841193Awesome vid! I know of a spot downstream of the coal plant in Alma that is stacked full of gar like that. Cool to see that under water video, as I always thought they were more of a suspending fish.

I really couldnt see the graph as there was not one on the bow of the boat, I would occasionally glance back to see the depth other than that I was busy watching landmarks trying to fight the wind and low current to hold the spot so BK could get the footage. Not exactly the easiest chore but definately fun and a great way to experience and learn better boat control
February 10, 2010 at 2:04 pm #841283first a video of a bunch of dead rough fish, now a video of a bunch of gar.
I’ll bet Dean is happy with your promotional videos from Everts and pool 4.J/K
February 11, 2010 at 10:43 pm #841572Thanks! Jesse worked hard to keep the boat nice and slow for good filming. I didn’t even yell at him this time.
PS I think it was Jesse that caught a 6 or so pound walleye on 6 dead minnows on a circle hook sitting on the bottom of the river last year. One of us in the boat did anyway.
Silly fish.
February 12, 2010 at 1:18 pm #841753It’s really surprising sometimes when you catch a fish in an unusual way. Like getting a walleye on a circle hook with dead minnows on it. Last spring I caught a 35″ northern while fishing for catfish on a circle hook with cut bluegill for bait. Also have caught big largemouth bass the same way.
February 12, 2010 at 1:45 pm #841766Exactly!
This hasn’t happened to me, but a friend of mine fishing out of Everts went to his favorite channel cat hole.
Using Stink Bait, he landed a 16 inch walleye.
I would have given 50 cents to have a picture of a walleye with a stink bait tube hanging out of the side of it’s mouth.
February 13, 2010 at 3:51 pm #842120I was surprised to see no other fish in this area, especially being a low current area.
