I thought DTRO was a pitch and chuck basshole? You forgot the 40lb kittie that ate nothing but night crawlers. Once someone figures out how to operate at night it is all about time on the water and trying stuff.

    Guess I wasn’t clear..

Dtro, what do you feel is the best flathead set up? From Rod to bait and why.

    I guess I wasn’t clear either

and… when it comes to sinkers (what this thread is about) I prefer those of the bank or pyramid variety. I don’t see the advantage of paying almost double the price (in some cases) for essentially the same thing. Like I stated earlier, they indeed have their applications and I will always have some in the boat with me.

It’s really no different than all the stupid auger/flasher/winter suit threads.

And to answer “what should I use”? When I started fishing, my answer would have been, “because that is what bill or bob or joe recommended on website xyz and I trust that”. Well, now (and this might sound a bit egotistical) I feel that I’ve put in enough time to be confident enough in not only choosing what works best for me, but also making recommendations that I feel would help out new folks getting into the sport and I have no problem whatsoever giving details why.

There is nothing in it for me. I don’t have any sponsors and I don’t guide. I just really really enjoy to spend time on the water and even more, I love fishing. The time I spend on websites and message boards chatting is an extension of that and I don’t expect everyone to agree with me, but yet at the same time would hope that others would respect my opinions.

I really do apologize for getting off track here

I really didn’t expect a straight forward answer to my question.

I ‘spose I could ask what is the rig(s) that you use?

…and to clarify, I really do respect our abilities and knowledge, however I do not respect the tactics that you are using.

Am I the only guy here that uses flat banks??

Nope. I use them every once in a while. Regular bank sinkers have been getting the most use by me over the last couple years, but I have plenty of flat banks, no-rolls, and pyramids in the arsenal as well.

Surely you jest, you must have thought you were somewhere else.

As far as absolute catfishing truths, here are a few

    1. Never will everyone agree on anything…

    2. white rods rule!

(note to self, find the spray i used for the rod tips last time…)

I don’t quite agree that there’s a time and place for everything, I’ve found there are a more than a few things that don’t really work (spincast reels for flatheads comes to mind). But I agree flexibility is important. There are places where a live bait below a slip float works well, even though I prefer to fish an anchored live bait most times.

And there was a time where I stopped using egg sinkers, thinking bell sinkers and no-rolls were the only ways to go. In situations where sideways roll isn’t an issue, I like the egg sinkers quite a bit. They sink fast, and I think a fish can sometimes move sideways without feeling the weight (although a few times that may result in an undetected bite).

I’d try bank sinkers, maybe with a slide and a short dropper, but I tend to prefer sliding sinkers as the dropper line adds a lot of “play.” There are advantages to three way rigs – quicker to change weights, and the dropper can break saving re-tying the whole rig. I just rarely use them.

I honestly have no idea what you are talking about. You put up a question asking about sinkers and I reply saying why I prefer one type over another.

So much for sinker poll 2010 Sorry guys

I’m going to bow out of here for a while.

Good luck to all this year

I didn’t fish with “Rushing” last summer but for the most part for many years, he used a flat bank with a very short (2″) piece of mono tied to a snap swivel.

Advantages… if the sinker hangs up, you can break the mono and save the rig and you can switch weights quickly. Sort of like a Team Catfish Sinker Slider.

Good setup although I don’t have personal experience with it.

Now back to crimping up handline shanks.

BTW… big deep breath of fresh air everyone.

We are all talking about fishing hook/line/sinker on the bottom and its ever so slight variations. We are all essentially discussing the SAME THING! There is really not all that much to argue about.

I really think there are better debates to have- circle vs j-hook, mono vs superline, tightline vs clicker, spinning vs baitcasting reel, even live bait hook location is a good one.

Got my breath back…busy day today! Had to run down to Everts after work to check out something….and yep, he has pencil sinkers, bank sinkers, No-roll, egg sinkers, bell sinkers and one pair of cement overshoes…in just my size!

PS Chris, you forgot rod holders, scales anchors and…think that’s it.

I use egg sinkers almost exclusively. No rolls tend to tangle too much on the cast and I’m sitting there wondering why I’m not getting a bite. Casting cross current requires a brick to actually told the bait in place and makes it difficult to detect bites. It also causes great gobs of trash to build up on your line if there is much trash in the water.

Egg sinkers: easy to mold, easy to use, usually able to pull out of hang ups.

I recently bought a cap from Cabela’s that I like a lot. It has one LED in the center front edge of the bill and two LEDs on the underside of the bill. It is pretty bright and you can have one or the other lights on or both at the same time.

I’ve seen those Jerry. You’ll have to let us know how you like it after using it this summer.

I HAVE had the opportunity to use it ice fishing after dark and like it very much for that.
