Keeping a Log

If you don’t already, I encourage you to keep a log of your fishing trips. As this actual page from our log shows, Ken and I had a terrific day on the Red River. When you understand that a “keeper” on the Red River in Canada is 24″ or less, you can look at this log and tell why I fished up there for three years before I actually put a “keeper” in the boat.

If you add a little more, bait used, something about location, water level and anything else you think is important, you have just added a valuable tool to your arsenal. By reviewing your logs over time, it will let you identify bait cycles, good spots in high water or low, near the dam or away and much more.

Besides, when you get older like I am, you can sit and look at the log and relive some of the best days of your life.

The log is key to replicating conditions and your catch. It also help an absent mind remember what happened. I will be releasing a beta version of the “Ultimate Fishing Log” for IDO members to download and use in the next few months. Keep your eyes open for the post. There are a lot of logs online you can use but then they have your data. If you have a program installed on your computer then you have your data.

I think mplspug has a pretty sweet log website- you can choose who views it if you register. You can access it through his avatar. I don’t use it yet but it looks like something people might get into.

What I have now was mostly put up for a web presence. I am very close to releasing a very detailed log application. You will not only be able to keep your logs for research, but also it will be a tool to help you identify actual patterns through analytics and algorithms.

Are you sure your a fisherman?

Actually, I think it is a great idea. More honest numbers greatly help research. But then again we are talking to fisherfolk. I’m putting up a few of my numbers from the past year that I hope will be interesting. Your log application sounds like a wonderful tool. I’ll go take a look.

OK, mplspug, I’m in. I created an account. Now tell BK to start filling some blanks.

You aren’t the first here to ask that one.

Here is my thoughts on analytics without getting into it too deeply right now. I am creating a tool that not only keeps log info, but also helps you interpret them leading to more successful trips.

That is one of the main purposes of keeping a log and if you are making a system easier, you are more likely to use it. I’m hoping to add some info before this dang hard water sets in.

I don’t always do it, but I try to keep a log. I have an app on my phone thats pretty cool and helps keep alot of my info.Information logged in the app includes GPS, weather, photo, audio, etc. Past trips and catches can be reviewed any time. Catches display on Google Maps too. Then when I’m home I can add it to the other online fishing log I use for future reference.

I just got a Droid Flaco and dowloaded that app and messed around with it a little. All it does is give me ideas. Creating an Android app that posts to my log automatically. Just another thing to the list of to dos. One day I will be done so I can just go fishing whenever I want again. P

I try to keep a log. Problem is, after a couple consecutive skunk nights, I tend to forget. It’s easy for me to remember to write down info when I catch fish, but when I’m not catching, I don’t write it down, and that data can be very important, too!

Tried “fishin buddy lite” log on my Droid and on the first entry it had to force quit

I personally think it is more important. It certainly is as important. It can be just as helpful to know what places to avoid, especially if the area is usually only hot during a certain time of the year.

Fishing logs are a tough. It’s another thing to hassle with when you are on the water and you truly won’t see it benefits until at least one year of logging. However, I think after a season or two the payoff is more than worth the effort and you will be a better fisherman because of it.

If you are going to keep a log, the best thing is to be prepared and have a system so it is a simple process when you are on the water.

    I’m sorry Pugster,

What’s the link to your site?

I couldn’t find the google ad for it.

Did you actually find it through a Google ad? I stopped doing ads for the time being until I released the detailed version.

    Pro Fishing Log
It probably hasn’t changed much since your last visit. Been doing all my work in the background.

How enthusiastic do you think a visitor to the site would be when they see that I (PFL Founder) only enter one about every 3-4 weeks? I need to get this done so I can get back to fishing more. Maybe I should post a teaser of the new log’s screens?

Really? Who caught those for you?

I’m not to sure a teaser would fly with the mgmt guys.

No, I was pulling your log on the ads. I haven’t been there for a heck of a long time and only had time for a short visit.

I’ve always kept loose track of the fish caught and weight. Length to me is for sturgeon and the scaly fish. Date, aprox time and flow.

As usual, at the end of the year I have a pile of release forms with a paper attached to it with the fish caught info. Now I just have to find the time to transfer it to the DNR log…wonder if the favorite daughter would do that.

My problem with logs is that when I’m finished fishing around 2 am…I hardly have time to put up a report and get to bed before I need to get up for the next day.

Sooo….here I sit with my pile of unprocessed info.

    Time to start thinking Blackberry.

Sorry, I meant a teaser on my site, not IDO. I try repecting the board. You don’t go against the family.

I normally don’t enter logs on the same day. As long as I have good rough notes and pictures, it is usually fresh enough in my head to where I can write something on another day. And when it comes to notes and telling a story about the trip, sometimes it is better to wait and let yourself digest it for a few days.

Nothing gets me more excited than reliving the day I caught that 18″ white bass. Sadly, I never went back and tried it again. I know there were more under that log. At least with a log entry I know when I can go back and try it next year. Doesn’t mean they will be there, but at least I have a starting point. Maybe next year the Army Corps of Engineers will have a path made for me. Shore fishing. Half the adveture is getting there.

You forgot your password? Have it resend it to you. Click the login link on in the links on the left, not the top. Once you go to that login page, you can click on “forgot your password?”.

Funny you should mention my nose. I was just telling the GF how I am not even consciencious of it any more. When I was a kid and 165#s I was, because it stood out more. I asked her, do you think when people meet me the first time they even notice I have a big nose. She was not shy with her “yes”.

And you are mentioning it by repeating it.

    I’ve tried 6′, 6″ …I’m at a loss.

Shoot me a pm once it’s reset…I’m off to the Bungalow with the FW now anyway.

BTW Thanks for telling us the story of your nose. Have any other body part stories you would like to share with us??

Nope. You know what they say, big nose, big nothing else.

I’ll have to figure out the password deal. I am hurt that you didn’t write any info down.

Try it again when you get back. It should not require you answer a question to reset your password.
