Sturgeon bait

I have read several posts regarding cut bait for sturgeon. This worked for me this year around Winona for Shovelnose but has not worked at all on the Rainy River for Lake Sturgeon. Has anyone else used anything but night crawlers successfully on the Rainy River?

3-5 live/cut fatheads work ok too. I’ve tried cut sucker up there and worms win out every time.

Sometimes a worm minnow sandwich goes good.

I should say I’ve never fished LOTW’s anytime other than spring.

Worms are not the bait of choice for fall fishing on the St Croix. I would say cut sucker, shad and fatheads have the advantage in the fall.

In my experience, crawlers seem to produce more shovels in late summer/fall.

    Worms also produce mudpuppies!

Fish that had been left out and turned rancid was mentioned in a post. Has anyone tried that in the LOTW area?

Not that I’m aware of. I’ve used white suckers that died in the minnow tank. They had a nice oder.

The rods with fresh cut bait seem to work the best…but I have an open mind except for when it comes to white and black rods.

I use black rods and paint the top section of the rod white. White rods are mostly fiberglass which makes them too flexible for the entire length. Give me a sensitive tip with some back bone further down.
