60 Pound Blue Cat!

My Dad went down to South Carolina to see a good friend Marlon Ormseth catfish guide to fish the famous Santee Cooper water system and was rewarded with a nice 60 lb. Blue Cat. It was caught slow trolling with electric motor pulling cutbait behind planer boards and herbie setups. Not bad for only his 5th or 6th time chasing cats. This might be a tough one to surpass, maybe we should visit South Carolina and try I hear the bite is just starting and is best in the winter months. He also caught many in the 20-30 lbs class and said his arms are still sore a couple days later.

For anyone interested here is a link for more info on catching Cats on boards: Trolling Planer Boards for Cats

Brian it’s already in the works and I anxiously wait. I don’t see why this same techinique wouldn’t work good for Flatheads and Channels on the Miss during late summer when they are chasing schools of shad. Marlon also catches alot of really nice flats with this technique down in SC. My Dad called right after catching and weighting this big Blue and said he was “high from his head to his toes”. I think he got Cat fever!!

Yo Brad….notice? A Blue and no gloves!

    T. I think that would work best on Pepin, but there is some riprap that drops of quickly in to deeper water it should work on.

Tell you what, everytime I’ve mentioned any kind of “alternative” method to catching cats on any forum, negativeness is the result. Guess I don’t earn bonus points for being creative.

Anyway, I think boards are a great idea. I think some sort of slow trolling hand line/3-way rig is a great idea. I think these options are valid when fish aren’t being concentrated by current to spots where anchoring is maybe the best idea.

Guys are warming up to bobbers. Bobbers move your bait around off the bottom. I’m not sure why the concept of boards is that hard to adapt.

Doing anything to move around is better than sitting there anchored watching a still rod.

Over the last few years there’s more photos of wallabie guys trolling, pitching or using three ways catching big cats than there are the die hard cat guys…this time of year.

Trying new things is a lot of fun, especially when it works.

I have no doubt in my mind that a guy could catch cats trolling, casting , drifting, heck even clonking. It’s when it becomes more work for me than it’s worth when I scrap the idea. If I wanted to stand and throw baits all day/night, I’d become a Musky fisherman. If I wanted to put out 10 planer boards and water skip the fish back to the boat, I’d become a walleye fisherman. If I wanted to die my hair blonde and wear a visor, I’d become a Bass fisherman.

Part of the reason I love Catfishing is that I enjoy the rituals. Part of which includes, gathering and keeping bait, dodging deadheads in the fog, clamping to a log, and tossing a 4oz’er on the bottom and waiting. For me it’s fun to kick back, throw the heels up on the gunwale, interlock the hands behind the neck and exhale. Maybe even get a card game going and light up a stogie from time to time.

I’m learning little by little that it is more about the fishing, and less about the catching.

Some call it being a “lazy fisherman” I call it stress management.

Hanson, don’t confuse negativity with stubbornness
