Sturgeon depth

I have been fishing the St. Croix from Bayport down to Hudson lately and have gotten in to a few, but nothing like the prior years. I noticed the shad are still up very shallow and I wonder if that is a factor…

Has anyone had a lot of luck this year on the St. Croix for Sturgies? If so, what depth did you catch them at?

I know we all like to keep our spots quiet on the river, but if anyone can point me in the right direction I’d appreciate it.

    Thanks!

My last outing I picked up 10 sturgies fishing solo. I have caught all my fish in one spot that was 28′. I have seen so many fish jumping in much shallower water though. I have also seen at least 1 feeding on the surface right next to my boat. He was trying to eat one of my dead fatheads.

Although I have not been having any luck in some of my other deep spots. Nor have I seen anyone else having any luck.

Water temps are still pretty warm… MY guess.
Pug can you pull up last years temps and then we can try to correlate a time when they started biting in conjunction with?

Aw man, I hate homework. I’ll see what I can dig up tonight.

Looks like weekend homework now. Didn’t have the time tonight.

Thinking back, the best outing (numbers) was mid afternoon, water temps was 58 degrees and the date was….10/13. Just before the season closed.

No hurry…. the water isn’t cooling down anytime soon.

I think most of the good reports are mid-October. Maybe we should petition Wisconsin and Minnesota to bump the season forward a little.

OK, there is no way I am sorting through all of the stuff on the board. I couldn’t make it easy when searching out the old posts, no matter how I tried. But what I did find is that in fact the bigger fish and better numbers are late in the season. With the weather like it has been this year, we may be pushing it back further, however it doesn’t take much to make the water cool down. It cools a lot faster than it warms, that is for sure.

Someone should make an application where this stuff would be easier to look up and analyze.

Last year the temp was 68 degrees when we got into a bunch over 50” I agree we should try to push back the season. I will be going out this week and I’ll keep you all posted. Thanks for the help! as a previous post mentioned, make sure to have a spotlight close…had a drunk idiot in a 30′ cruiser get so close that he pulled up 2 of our lines and left a wake that almost tipped the old 82′ Starcraft!

    Nuts isn’t it?

There has to be something that can be done about this. What really saddens me is knowing that one of these days I’ll open Ido and read about one or more of my friends that was struck while sturgeon fishing by another boat.
