Deep or shallow?

Hello all! I have been targeting flatheads in deep water with nearby timber or along riprap. All my fish have come in deep water (25-32 feet). I have tried shallower with no luck. My question is this, do you generally start deep and move shallow as the night wears on, or do you stay in your deep holes? I have seen people comment on the shallow water, but I just cannot find them there. As stated in other posts, early bite right now and nothing after 9PM. Just wondering if I need to move shallower and target the hunting grounds of these beasts. Do they move that much at night?

What I have seen this year is that in the summer months – the flats would come up into the shallows at night. Now that it is getting colder at night – i tend to believe these cats are staying deep. We have caught some cats in 1-2 feet of water lately, but nothing of size.

I would stick to the deeper holes and don’t be afraid to move rather quickly.

Don’t be afraid to fish shallow at night. Shallow shelf next to deep water, add in some wood, you’re in business.

I heard that they’re biting on bobbers in less than 5 feet of water…on shelves close to deeper channels.

I also hear the sumo channels are biting on the Minnesota River, upstream from Jordan.

From here on out it’s all deep for me. The shallowest I’ll fish will be tomorrow night, when I’m in about 18′ but adjacent to 40′.

Channel cats were hot in shallow water just down from the dam just upstream from Jordan. At least that is what I saw on a video the other day.
