If you haven’t tried the Cat Bobber and are looking to try something a little bit different, its a fun way to fish.

Its taken me 3 years of off and on fishing with this to finally get some action on it. Then in one night POW 3 fish taken on the Bobber.
To Rig you need a bobber stop, a bead, then your bobber, another bead, weight, another bead, swivel, leader and circle hook.
The amount of weight depends on the size of the bobber. In this set up I’m using 4 oz. If I go any less the bobber wants to lay on its side. You will also need a glow bracelet or necklace to put in the top of it so you can see it from a distance.
I was using a 7/0 circle, I’ve been fishing live bait under it. I,m sure cut would work just as well.

Where are you fishing this Larry?

Along banks or more toward the main channel?

I’d love to bobber fish for cats. I’d prefer it is the situation presented itself to me, but I am always in the current. I know you can fish them there too, I’d rather not bother. I eyeball those bobbers every time I am in at Bob’s. I should probably get one and have it on hand.

It depends Brian, You want to use in an area with slower current when possible, and a fairly consistent depth. I’ve done both… the flow on the MN is pretty slow right now. Ive tried in faster areas and it can be a little challenging.

    Good post, Larry.

I’ve done similar rigs with small livebaits (smaller foam floats and 1-2 oz of weight). But, I’ve had better luck with 5-6″ Big Fish Slider floats, or those large styrofoam “popper floats.”

I was trying to drift baits up close to heavy cover, but as you can imagine those small sunfish swim right into the snags and you end up hung-up.

Are you having better luck drifting the cleaner bottom areas off cover? And, how deep/far off the bottom are you fishing?

Of course, float fishing dead baits (cut-bait or dip baits) works great at times for channel cats. And it’s a blast watching the float just start drifting off in one direction…

biggest was 20lb followed by an 11lb channel and one little guys that might have tipped the scales at 2 lbs.
