I’m posting this in reply to a thread i read where people reported missing most of their fish. I have two experiences with this. One is that if it’s a short fast jerky run, it’s probably a gar. So that is not anyones fault for missing that one. But with the kitties I can speak from disheartening experience that for two years I tried to set the hook like I was hooking into a musky or one of the bass things some of you have probably heard of. And while I was doing this I was hooking up about 10 percent. (sometimes less) Finally I tried a sweeping hookset and life has never been the same. This year I have hooked easily 85-90percent of my runs. I use a 7/0 gamma octo hook and take the fish as fast as I can. Which is how long it takes me to get to the back of the boat lift the rod out and turn off the bait clicker. I then put the rod at 10 o clock and engage the reel. I let the fish slowly pull my rod tip down to 7-8o’clock and then start leaning back with the rod. SLOWWWWLY… As I feel the weight of the fish I just lean back harder. Once my rodtip hits midnight I start crankin on it to get it up and out of any goods on the bottom. I’m sure everyone does it different but this has revolutionized my catfishing. I have very very few gut hooks and 99 percent of boated fish are hooked right in what I call the sweetspot. The meaty lip area in the upper jaw right in the corner of their mouth.
