Here is a couple links that some might find to be interesting. Lately I’ve been working with these sights for the limited fishing times I’ve had this season.
For the weather nuts….. you’ve probably got these dialed in already but, for the rest of us these might be of interest.
They are weather (barometric maps) so you can track weather patterns and pressure systems as they move through…. I wouldn’t go so far as to completely plan your trip around this info… but it might be of use.
The second link is a conversion chart for millibars to HG pressure or vice versa.
Most cat guys can probably agree about, low pressure systems turning on the bite….sometimes in a big way.

Low pressure bites aren’t just for cat guys. Nothing gets me more excited to fish than to know a low pressure area is moving in. Another good site for tracking pressure is weatherunderground.com. I like it because it graphs it out so you can not only see the current pressure, but the trend as well.

So exactly how do you use this information? How do you see cats relating to changes in pressure levels?

    Shawn

ps I have to confess, I haven’t paid as much attention to this one as flow and temperature…

I can say how pressure affects fishing on a basic level, but maybe Larry has more about how it relates to cats?

Someone pointed out that my link needs more explanation. I am used to going there and searching for a previous days info.

To see the pressure for the current day, use the search box at the top to get weather conditions for the location you want. The find the ‘Detailed History and Climate’ dropdown in the History & Almanac section on the page it brings you to. Select today’s date (should be today by default) and click view. At the bottom you will find all the graphs.

    That’s a great tip Larry

Pressure is an often overlooked aspect to the fish bite. It isn’t a guarantee and I don’t have an scientific data to back up my findings, however I’ve had WAY too many occasions in which a sudden drop in pressure seemed to make every flat in the area go crazy.

I love nothing more than to pull up the radar on my phone and see red all around me and hopefully just skirting my location. The window of opportunity is usually small due to either your boat being in direct path and or the front pushing through and the pressure skyrocketing, but if you are set up in a good spot when that happens it usually spells fish.

On a related note, if the system has totally pushed out and cleared, my confidence goes right with it, but there are times when front after front will move through, so even if I have to hunker down up in a creek or under a tree, I will sit out these waves because the fish will continue to bite throughout.

    Great tip, Larry.

I tacked it right into my Favorites so I can find it right away. Thanks.

    Good site!

Wunderground.com (weather underground) is a great site, too. TONS of info including weather histories. My goto site generally for most weather inquiries. Nice tables of windspeed / direction history or forecast data for any given location.

The pressure dropped low and fast yesterday. I hope to see some reports showing the action was hot!

The FW and I caught 4 in the morning. Some were bullhead size. I was planning on going out again last night, but my arms are all red and they hurt.

Not sure, but I think Steve DeMars has one on his ‘boat’. It makes a pretty good rain screen too.
