Tough night

So I invite a few folks to come fish down here on Mendota. I saw a good stable weather pattern and invited RB to come down. The stars aligned and he made the hour and a half drive south to see if the channels would be on the feed bag. We tried to do some drifting before it got too late and couldn’t buy a bite so we crossed the lake and setup a spread of bobbers with a sonnys tube suspended 4 feet down. Half an hour later a rig goes down and I land a chunky 7lber who fought much harder than she packed. Then we proceeded to wait for 3 hours and I know he has to leave soon and I had invited him down for no bites. I noticed one of my rigs was acting like it had some attention so I changed places so he could get it. Behind me I hear a rod thump. and a big old splash so we switched places again and RB was into a good fish. It got into the weeds and he handled it perfectly just maintaining pressure. Taped out at 30 inches. Then its twin sister hit my rig. We had to wrestle it out of the anchor rope. Patience was key tonight. RB is a great guy to fish with. Great stories. I look forward to fish his water. This pattern just gets better all summer long.

Glad the stars worked out! Awesome channels Kev!

By reading to posts tonight, it appears everyone was having a good time…even if they lost a big one!!

PS Good to see RB fishing again.

Those Mendota cats impress me every time with their amazing girth…

Around here a 30 incher is around 10 pounds, but those look like they could be 15.

I really think I need to make a business trip to Madtown in the near future!

Pretty looking channels, Kev. Do you think this is a post-spawn bite?

    Steve,

These are post spawn females. The males are still on the nest. I didn’t have a scale along but I’d say they went 15 easy. Matt, you can come down anytime. Just look for flat weather conditions. Low wind is key. The end of July can be really good.

Thanks again Kev. It was well worth the trip. You promised big channels and with 2 fish over 15 pounds you certainly delivered. Couldn’t ask for anything more. Matt hit the nail on the head…amazing girth on these fish.

You are welcome. You get into a good bite up there, I’d be willing to come up.
